Medical simulations are becoming more advanced and more reliable in training medical students and new surgeons. Especially in the context of delicate surgeries, such as cataract surgery, the medical community is shifting from traditional medical training to sophisticated virtual reality simulations. In this thesis, we present a simulation built in a three-dimensional environment that aids in training medical residents to perform cataract surgeries. The application utilizes haptic devices as a means of interaction, which enriches the application by providing a sense of touch and force-feedback to users. In addition, we discuss our modeling of the environment and the decisions undertaken in the design. We also compare this 3D application with similar applications in terms of functionality but with different user interfaces, and mention what was the eye surgeon's reaction towards each interface in the training simulation. Finally, we conclude with future modifications of the application and describe a future direction.

The term “haptics” refers to the science of sensing and manipulation through touch. Multiple disciplines such as biomechanics, psychophysics, robotics, neuroscience, and software engineering converge to support haptics, and generally, haptic research is done by three communities: the robotics community, the human computer interface community, and the virtual reality community. This book is different from any other book that has looked at haptics. The authors treat haptics as a new medium rather than just a domain within one of the above areas. They describe human haptic perception and interfaces and present fundamentals in haptic rendering and modeling in virtual environments. Diverse software architectures for standalone and networked haptic systems are explained, and the authors demonstrate the vast application spectrum of this emerging technology along with its accompanying trends. Minimally invasive surgery is a cost-effective surgery which offers less pain, less trauma and shorter recovery for the patient than traditional open surgery. Nevertheless, surgeons require new hand-eye coordination and substantial training to master the skills. Virtual reality training simulators with visual and touch sensation feedback are being developed to improve surgeons' proficiency. Research studies have shown that update rates of 1 kHz or more are desired for force/tactile feedback when interactive with mechanics-based virtual models. We proposed a mathematical model of a novel 4-DOF haptic interface for such training application. We developed and studied a novel desktop computational platform for force control of the device. Such architecture can offer a novel distributed system for tele-operation over the Internet and haptic rendering of deformable objects using medical imaging data. Through analysis of the experimental setup, key parameters have been identified for synthesis of a future tele-operation environment.
