I fi nally found the time to fi nish the book I had years ago promised my grandson I would write, to tell him how he was born. Every time I started to write, I was confronted by another roadblock. After my bouts with cancer, surgery, chemo, and then more surgery, I just could not get it fi nished. Now, I have been able to get the book in print to fulfi ll my promise to write my grandson an answer to his often-asked question, Where did I come from, Oma? I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did writing it, and that you will pass it on to your children and grandchildren, so it can help answer questions they might have on how they were born. I want to thank Nicholas for never giving up on me and for asking the question, which gave me the idea that all children might enjoy the answer. I also need to thank my gynecologist, Dr. Jeff rey B. Frank, affi liated with the Reading Hospital and Medical Center (Reading, Pennsylvania), for proof-reading the accuracy of my details, and my friend Gloria Beidler, who continued to encourage me to get the book fi nished. It is my love of children that kept me writing, to help parents who simply do not know what to say to their children on the subject. Th ank you for taking the time to read this book. Enjoy the story of Where did I come from, Oma?

Young children ask questions about sex, sexuality, conception, and birth that can be embarrassing or uncomfortable for parents. With her characteristic good sense and cool head, author Deborah Roffman will put even the most awkward parents at ease, giving them the skills to talk confidently with young children about these important but delicate issues. In this wonderfully reassuring book, readers will learn that the key to talking with children about sex is knowing that their questions fall into three easily recognizable categories. At age three or four, kids are curious about geography ("Where was I before I was here?"), and at four or five, about delivery ("Exactly how did I get out of there?"). Finally, the six year old's classic stumper--"But how'd I get in there in the first place?"--is about cause and effect, not about imminent sexual activity! With the emotional and developmental underpinnings of a child's curiosity understood, parents will find their tongues; with Deborah Roffman's wise, warm and practical advice, they will be well prepared for the inevitable flow of questions in the years to come.

“I DON’T THINK EITHER ONE OF US GOT THIS OUT OF OUR SYSTEM….” Jack Granger’s reference to a few stolen kisses haunted Abby Walsh. For being with him and his daughter made her feel like a penniless kid with her nose pressed against the toy-store window. Everything she’d ever wanted was right in front of her, but still completely out of reach. Well, Abby could hardly complain; the man was onlykeeping his promise—keeping their relationship casual. Still, Abby felt a sexual thrill she couldn’t ignore. And she’d caught enough heated glances and heard enough strangled sighs to suspect he was suffering as much frustration as she was. Phooey. She’d never been this attracted to anyone. Ever. But there was no future for them. End of story. Right? If only it were that simple….

Black-robed priests roam the countryside with shotguns. The Green Legionnaires break into houses. Acid rains ruin the forest of America, as hordes of refugees from the desolate northern cities travel south for the most terrible of winters. For Arthur Ferrier and his family, the pleasant town of South Haven has long been home. But what was once so familiar and comfortable has now been dissolved into a frightening strangeness. The local newspaper stops delivering, the power fails, and then come the food riots and the closing of the hospitals. For reasons no one really seems to understand, the centers of civilized life are breaking apart all around them. But Arthur remembers his father’s dream, and he fingers the key around his neck—a key that opens a lock to a door far away in the northern mountains, a place where he and Marilyn, his wife, hope to live and raise their children in peace. Thus begins the odyssey of the Ferrier family as they pursue their last hope: the safe haven prepared by a wise grandfather. It is a journey filled with adventure, peril, and desperate faith. And One Hundred Times to China is a novel of terror, courage, and one family’s fight for survival with life’s greatest gift as its only weapon—their love for one another.
