General Anthem for SATB voices and Piano; words from Matthew 6:9-13; adapted by Mark Miller and Laurie Zelman; music by Mark Miller - an anthem from Abingdon Press Choral Club volume 17.1 (Winter - Spring 2007) You will be captivated by the opening flutter of the right-hand accompaniment, winging as if surrounded by angel wings. Unison voices enter on the familiar text, gently unfolding the lilting 6/8 melody. A beautifulmolto ritardando brings a humble pause at “forgiven.” Parts begin dividing at measure 19 with text moving into “light” and God's glory. The opening phrases are repeated, both unison and two-part, iterating “holy is your name.” The accompaniment will challenge weaker players. Frequent hand crossings and the D-flat major key require an accomplished player. The results will be beautiful! The vocal parts are easy and accessible to most four-part ensembles. Keep this in mind for both youth and adult groups. Performance options include singing the first section as a solo. Tutti choir could enter at measure 12, illustrating “us” in the text. This could be sung as a prayer anthem, a call to prayer, or response to prayer in place of the congregation reciting the text. An A/P CD is available for this anthem - item # 0687335779. Appropriate days: General worship.

General Anthem for SATB voices and Piano; words from Psalm 51:10-13, 15; music by Mark Burrows - an anthem from Abingdon Press Choral Club volume 17.1 (Winter - Spring 2007) This personal confession of David serves as our own call to repentance and holiness. The quiet introduction and opening phrases establish the prayerful quality of the melody and serve as a refrain to the anthem. New material appears in measure 21, "Cast me not away." Textures vary with divided women followed by unison men. SATB voices complete the stanza returning to the refrain. Divided men continue at measure 53 on new stanza material. Women answer with all voices offering praise at measures 64 to 68. The final refrain includes a brief soprano. The accompaniment clearly supports the voices and provides solid harmonic structure. An interesting rhythmic variation is introduced at measures 53-60 in the left hand. The vocal parts alter the tonal center through the use of accidentals. Performance options include singing this setting in place of the Psalter reading for the day. The opening refrain, measures 1-20, may be used as a call to confession. Conclude measure 20 on a G major chord in the accompaniment. An A/P CD is available for this anthem - item # 0687335779. Appropriate days: Service themes on personal holiness, repentance, renewal; use of Psalm 51; and general worship.

General Anthem for SSATB voices, High Voice Solo, a cappella; words and music by Ben Reynolds; arranged by Ken Dosso - an anthem from Abingdon Press Choral Club volume 17.1 (Winter - Spring 2007) What will your heart yearn for upon your last breath? This text sings praise and worship before God, kneeling with a humble heart, seeking grace. Voices enter on a unison D and gently move in contrary motion to open into a rich six-voice A-flat 7 chord on "breath." The melody sits in the soprano voice with frequent homophonic treatment. The middle section, beginning in measure 27, is set for five voices, places the melody in the tenor line with others punctuating the text. The tenors' eighth-note movement draws the listener's ear while remaining voices sing augmented lines. The final section, measure 36 to the end, adds a soprano descant (response) against the homophonic choral writing. Measures 53-57 hint in structure to the middle section, tenor lead with long lines in the other voices. The last phrase iterates the title phrase in all voices. All vocal ranges are well suited to the parts. The descant's tessitura is high and does include a B-flat. The use of non-chord tones adds richness and color to the harmonic structure. This may require some attention in rehearsal for accuracy. Performance options include doubling the voices for added stability. The open score may challenge less-experienced accompanists. You may sing this with a choir or small ensemble. It may be used as an anthem, call to confession, or call to discipleship. Appropriate days: Service themes on commitment and general worship.
