Excerpt from Walter Pater Originally published eight years ago, as the initial volume in the Contemporary Men of Letters Series, this little book had the luck to be the first biographical study of Walter Pater. There have been other Lives since then, - Mr. Benson's competent and perceptive book, and Mr. Thomas Wrights bi-voluminous performance. Both of these writers have enjoyed special opportunities for acquaintance with the details of Pater's life to which the present writer could lay no claim, and they have turned them, the one to very good, and the other to very bad account. Excerpt from Selections From Walter Pater On first thinking of this book my main principles were merely to omit the passage on "La Giaconda" and to say nothing of Pater's style. But I soon found that however well those view's would do in a negative way, there had to be something more positive to begin on. I tried, therefore, in this selection to put together essays that would be characteristic in ideas and style, and which would also illustrate the very broad range of Pater's interests, as well as the different periods of his life. Keeping close to these ideas necessitated many omissions which I regret, - one should really read all Pater. The selection will, however, give an idea of his very diverse work; there are essays in general, criticism, poetry, philosophy, painting, sculpture, architecture, as well as several of those studies in criticism which he put in the form of fiction. They all come from what may be called the regular collections; the essays from the "Guardian" are mostly ephemeral comment on books that were of interest often for the moment only, and except for those on Amiel and English literature have a negative rather than a positive interest. Excerpt from The Life of Walter Pater, Vol. 1 of 2 Chapter In short, although Pater had many admirable qualities, and many graces to which we shall endeavour to do justice, he was neither a saint nor a martyr. But to the ordinary reader the most amazing fact in connection with Mr. Benson's book is the announce ment in his preface that he had the most kind and courteous assistance throughout from some of Pater's closest friends. We are quite sure that these friends did not wittingly mislead Mr. Benson, and equally sure that Mr. Benson put down nothing which he believed to be incorrect. What then, it will be asked, is the explanation The answer is a simple one. Pater had a curious dislike to mingling his friendships, and a persistent habit of concealing from one friend what he would reveal to another. For example, I discovered that Mr. Richard C. Jackson, a friend, as we said, of seventeen years' standing, had never heard of Mr. Moorhouse, and I do not suppose that Mr. Moorhouse ever heard of Mr. Jackson, while neither of them is once mentioned in Mr. Benson's pages. Mr. Jackson, Mr. Gosse, Dr. Shadwell, Mr. Richard Robinson, and Dr. Lee were all friends of Pater - but, having little in common with one another, they rarely met, and Pater scarcely ever spoke to one about the others. Thus it is not at all surprising that those from whom Mr. Benson derived his knowledge made amazing mistakes, or that they were absolutely ignorant of what we shall prove to have been the salient events of Pater's life. The condition of affairs then is owing not to them but to the peculiarity of Pater's temperament - and very peculiar it must have been if (and Mr. Benson says it was so) persons could live with him twenty years, during which he wrote tens of thousands of lines of both prose and poetry, and not be aware that he was a writer at all. Excerpt from Walter Pater Er, Vol. 5: A Critical There were times when it seemed to Dorian Gray that the whole of history was merely the record of his own life, not as he had lived it in act and circumstance, but as his imagination had created it for him, as it had been in his brain and in his passions. He felt that he had known them all, those strange terrible figures that had passed across the stage of the world and made sin so marvellous and evil so full of wonder. It seemed to him that in some mysterious way their lives had been his own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of Walter Pater, Vol. 2 of 2 The next essay - The Bacchanals-a pendant to the preceding, is a kind of paraphrase of Euripides' play, with which Pater takes very much the liberty that F itzgerald did with the poems of Omar Khayyam and Jami. Those scenes in old Thessaly are brought before us with extraordinary vividness. We see the Mima Ionian furies dancing wildly under the forest boughs their draperies touched by the wind, their heads thrown suddenly back; our ears are dinned with ithyphallics, the crash of cymbals and the rattle of tambourines, and we see the fatuous Pentheus sallying grotesquely to his frightful doom, and then (sickening sight his torn and bleeding limbs lying scattered through the tangled wood.
