As a senior aeronautical engineer with Britain's flagship airlines in the 60s, 70s and 80s, it was engineer and playboy Nazie El Masry's job to keep these man-made birds in perfect flying condition. Turbulent Times and Clear Skies is the story of his colourful exploits in the most glamorous industry of all, as he defeated the odds to build an international aviation business of his own - with offices in Singapore, Miami, Holland and the UK. From the crew and pilots' parties to which he supplied contraband liquor and introductions to the wildest international hotspots in Libya, Tunis, Casablanca and Europe; to his early adventures wheeling and dealing in 1970s Britain, along the way Nazie has rubbed shoulders with slum landlords, show girls, heads of state and movie stars. This is also the story of an Egyptian childhood and a young man who lost his father but found happiness.ÿ

The faith journey can be hard, but it doesn't have to be. Abraham, Joseph, David, Paul, and even Jesus himself--all heroes of the faith who experienced both the soaring grace of answered prayers and crushing sorrow when God seemed unwilling to respond or too far away to hear. And yet, even in the darkest times, God was working, writing an unseen story of redemption that would save the world. When we pray, how do we see beyond the immediate and into the eternal? How do we know when to keep praying and when to give up; when to consider something a promise from God and when to recognize that it was from our own imagination? Why does silence from God rarely mean no and almost always mean come closer? The One Year Praying in Faith Devotional answers these questions and many more, taking you through a 365-day journey that will help you experience a prayerful relationship with God like never before.

The results of a systematic and statistical study of clear air turbulence encountered along the main airline routes over the Soviet Union and the socialist countries of Eastern Europe are now available in summary form. The data were collected by crews of turboprop and turbojet aircraft, generally flying at altitudes of 6-10.5 km, for four 5-day periods (9-13 December 1964, 10-14 March, 9-13 June, and 8-12 September 1965). The data were grouped into four 6-hour daily observation periods (2400-0559, 0600-1159, 1200-1759, and 1800-2359 hr Greenwich time). Some of the results of a similar study made by Colson in 1962 for the United States, and those obtained in an earlier study by Soviet scientists, are compared with the data of the present study. Major aspects of the analysis include determination of (1) the probability of encountering turbulent zones in various regions of and altitudes above the area covered by the study, (2) the relationship of turbulence to wind speeds and directions, vertical wind shear, Richardson number, and horizontal wind shear. Data on actual encounters with turbulence are presented for the four 5-day periods in tables and are graphically portrayed on four small-scale maps.

This book collects most of the talks and poster presentations presented at the Optical Turbulence OCo Astronomy meets Meteorology international conference held on 15OCo18 September, 2008 at Nymphes Bay, Alghero, Sardinia, Italy. The meeting aimed to deal with one of the major causes of wavefront perturbations limiting the astronomical high-angular-resolution observations from the ground. The uniqueness of this meeting has been the effort to attack this topic in a synergic and multidisciplinary approach promoting constructive discussions between the actors of this science OCo the astronomers, meteorologists, physicists of the atmosphere and the experts in adaptive optics and interferometry techniques whose main goal is to correct, in real-time, the wavefront perturbations induced by atmospheric turbulence to restore at the telescope foci the best available image quality. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Optical Turbulence in High Angular Resolution Techniques in Astronomy (494 KB). Contents: Optical Turbulence in High Angular Resolution Techniques in Astronomy (J M Beckers); Optical Turbulence Profiles at CTIO from a 12-Element Lunar Scintillometer (P Hickson et al.); High Resolution SLODAR Measurements on Mauna Kea (T Butterley et al.); How We Can Understand the Antarctic Atmospheric? (J W V Storey et al.); The Paranal Surface Layar (J Melnick et al.); Introduction to Data Assimilation in Meteorology (P Brousseau OC L Auger); The Mauna Kea Weather Center: A Case for Custom Seeing Forecasts (T Cherubini et al.); Dealing with Turbulence: MCAO Experience and Beyond (R Ragazzoni et al.); Future-Look Science Operations for the LBT (R F Green); Surface Layer SLODAR (J Osborn et al.); and other papers.
