Excerpt from The West Indies as They Are, or a Real Picture of Slavery, but More Particularly as It Exists in the Island of Jamaica: In Three Parts, With Notes England; whilst the abolitionists, the friends of the Slaves in this country, on the other hand, have been misinformed as to some of the evils of Slavery, and have represented to the world, by their writings, the condition of the Negroes as being rather worse than it really is. The truth, most likely, lies between the statements of these two parties, for the colonists may very justly be suspected of being too much interested to give an impartial statement of their own afl'airs, being prejudiced by birth, or long residence, and by their contempt for the Negro race; whilst some of their opponents may have sufl'ered them selves to be carried away by the overflowings (fl'hununnty and.a.gwmmrous synqnumq'fimrthe Oppressed, without a due consideration for vested rights; or may have been misled by the interested statements of disappointed men; or through an opposite interest, some of them may have.
