Some thought him a decora tion, and sought to treat him as such. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Gold Cache And with that he put into my hand several shining, heavy yellow disks that he drew from the pouch. They were twenty-dollar gold pieces and there were twenty-five of them! I held in my hand five hundred dollars in gold! It was more money than I had seen in my whole life. To my eager questions he replied briefly that he and his party had found the gold pieces on the white men's trail far to the south, but, as the Shining buttons had no holes, the party had taken only a few of them. Excerpt from On the Trail of the War These pages are nothing more than they profess to be - the story of ordinary incidents in an extraordinary state of things; recollections of the Trail of the War, not of the front. Hasty work is generally the weakest plea that can be urged for lenient criticism but perhaps in this case the circumstances are somewhat exceptional. At least, if the thing were to be done at all, 'twere well 'twere done quickly. This narrative being original from first to last, the writer, in justice to himself and his readers, volunteers the assurance, that any incident or occasional expression of opinion they may fancy they recognize, has been borrowed only from communications of his own that have appeared. Excerpt from The War Bond Story This is a story of the War Bond program during the war years of 1941 through 1945. It is a story of four men who planned, organized and operated the most successful promotion, advertising and government financing program this world has ever known - Secretary of Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr., Harold Graves, Assistant to the Secretary, Dr. Peter Odegard, professor at Amherst College and Theodore (Ted) Gamble, businessman, Portland, Oregon. It is also a story of thousands of patriotic American volunteers who made the program succeed. These volunteers did not ask what their government could do for them - they did what they could for their government. Never question the fact that when the "chips are down" and this country is in danger, the people of the United States will do their part in any worthwhile government program, if responsible leaders tell them what they want done. One must understand, in writing the War Bond story, it was impossible for any one person to know about every promotion or activity of the program. It covered too much area. The thousands of volunteers were prominent citizens from banking and finance, industry, labor unions, schools, advertising, minority groups and every phase of American life. After each state was organized they operated in an independent manner. Programs, promotions and materials were presented which they could accept or reject. This was not a military organization and it did not operate as employer and employee. It was in September 1939 when I first met Harold Graves. I had been working on tax fraud cases in Boston as Special Agent of the Intelligence Unit, Treasury Department. My Chief, Elmer Irey, had phoned me to report to his office in Washington at once. I presumed it was another tax fraud case. It was a surprise when he advised me that Graves wanted to see me at the Treasury. I was not very enthusiastic about such an interview. Graves had an unfavorable reputation among the agents of being tough, unreasonable, and if he thought an agent was inefficient in any way, he would "cut him to pieces." On entering Graves' outer office I couldn't help overhear Special Agent Barker explain to Graves that he had been away for over three months and he wanted to return home. The remarkable untold story of France’s courageous, clever vinters who protected and rescued the country’s most treasured commodity from German plunder during World War II. "To be a Frenchman means to fight for your country and its wine." –Claude Terrail, owner, Restaurant La Tour d’Argent In 1940, France fell to the Nazis and almost immediately the German army began a campaign of pillaging one of the assets the French hold most dear: their wine. Like others in the French Resistance, winemakers mobilized to oppose their occupiers, but the tale of their extraordinary efforts has remained largely unknown–until now. This is the thrilling and harrowing story of the French wine producers who undertook ingenious, daring measures to save their cherished crops and bottles as the Germans closed in on them. Wine and War illuminates a compelling, little-known chapter of history, and stands as a tribute to extraordinary individuals who waged a battle that, in a very real way, saved the spirit of France.

Scholars hail Confederate General John Bell Hood's personal papers as "the most important discovery in Civil War scholarship in the last half century." This invaluable cache includes documents relating to Hood's U.S. Army service, Civil War career, and postwar life. It includes letters from Confederate and Union officers, unpublished battle reports, detailed medical reports relating to Hood's two major wounds, and dozens of letters exchanged between Hood and his wife Anna. This treasure trove is being made available for the first time in paperback for both professional and amateur Civil War historians in The Lost Papers of Confederate General John Bell Hood, edited and annotated by award-winning author Stephen M. Hood. The historical community long believed General Hood's papers were lost or destroyed, and numerous books and articles were written about him without the benefit of these invaluable documents. In fact, the papers had been carefully preserved for generations by Hood's descendants. In 2012, collateral descendent Stephen Hood was given access to these papers as part of his research for his book John Bell Hood: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of a Confederate General (Savas Beatie, 2013). This 200+ document collection sheds important light on some of the war's lingering mysteries and controversies. For example, letters from Confederate officers help explain Hood's failure to entrap Schofield's Union army at Spring Hill, Tennessee, on November 29, 1864. Another letter by Lt. Gen. Stephen D. Lee helps to explain Maj. Gen. Patrick Cleburne's gallant but reckless conduct that resulted in his death at Franklin. Lee also lodges serious allegations against Confederate Maj. Gen. William Bate's troops. Other papers explain, for the first time, the purpose and intent behind Hood's "controversial" memoir Advance and Retreat, and validate its contents. While these and others offer a military perspective of Hood the general, the revealing letters between he and Anna, his beloved and devoted wife, help us better understand Hood the man and husband. Historians and other writers have spent generations speculating about Hood's motives, beliefs, actions, and objectives and the result has not always been flattering or even fully honest. Now, long-believed "lost" firsthand accounts previously unavailable offer insights into the character, personality, and military operations of John Bell Hood the general, husband, and father.

Excerpt from A Knight of Columbia: A Story of the War Blue eyes had been speaking full five minutes, that other sound than that of his own voice had gradually ceased and people were looking and listening - not until then, either, had he permitted himself so much as a Single glance toward that certain proscenium box, but now one swift look flashed thither as he paused to let the first ripple of applause subside, and a radiant face, a beautiful face, fixed full upon him, met the sudden message from his eyes, and with interest returned it. Five minutes more and applause and Cheering followed fast on every paragraph - ten, and the dome was ringing with wild acclamation. In a thrill ing climax he had carried them to the wooded slopes of the Potomac where another flag, in the Same vivid hues of scarlet and white and blue, was fluttering along the South ern shore, and then in prophecy had pictured the future of that alien banner, of the sons of the South who bore it, of the men of the Union who were destined to overwhelm it, and closed his fifteen minutes address with a peroration burning with patriotism and courage and hope; and men and women, old and voung, his thousand odd of friends and hearers, seemed lifted off their feet with enthusiasm and delight. Whoever dreamed Rex Ingraham could make such a speech! Said Whiting, head of the class. Whoever began to know what he could do or could not do! Said Burnham, his inseparable chum and unneeded prompter. The manuscript of a now famous speech had fallen to the floor, forgotten, as at last Ingraham, with brimming eyes and trembling hands was permitted to with draw from the stage, to be again seized by Burnham and.
