Why did it please God that His Son was brutalized? Why does a loving God allow us to hurt so deeply? What made Jesus' death any different from thousands who died just as He did? Darkness covered the earth that day. The sun fled. From noon until three, the darkness of death hovered over the hill where the Son of God was dying. As Christians, we know the story well?the nails in His hands, the thorns on His head, the gambling soldiers, the taunting thieves. Charles Swindoll invites us to "return with me to those epochal days when our Lord walked into the awful darkness?which He did not deserve?only to arise into the sunlit dawn of triumph, providing us a victory from which we shall never know defeat." Go with him and you will find that, as only he can, Dr. Swindoll uncovers new meaning in the Cross and the Resurrection for those who face death and darkness today. His fresh perspectives on these core events of faith can help you see beyond the darkness to the new light of dawn.

Barabbas is the acquitted; the man whose life was exchanged for that of Jesus of Nazareth, crucified upon the hill of Golgotha. Barabbas is a man condemned to have no god. "Christos Iesus" is carved on the disk suspended from his neck, but he cannot affirm his faith. He cannot pray. He can only say, "I want to believe." Translated from the Swedish by Alan Blair

Barabbas is referenced in only eleven Bible verses in the New Testament. Then he disappears from the story. "A Life for Barabbas" imagines how he might have lived the rest of his life. Here was a notorious man, convicted and facing crucifixion, suddenly pardoned by Pilate and released from prison. Stunned and confused by this turn of events, he flees the city and within hours finds himself on Calvary where he encounters the crucified Jesus, and there begins Barabbas' transformation from unrepentant rebel to redeemed Christian leader. Part adventure story, part history, the novel is set during the 40 years between the crucifixion of Jesus and the siege of Jerusalem. While the work is fictional, as are some of the characters and their activities, it is vividly drawn with well-researched details of daily life in first century Palestine. The storyline closely follows Biblical events and influences on the evolution of Christianity in the First Century, and, in the process, seeks to clarify some of Jesus' core teachings. A Life for Barabbas will appeal to fans of The Robe, Ben Hur, Spartacus, The Spear, and The Shack, to name a few. A Life for Barabbas is different in that the entire story is based on researched historic facts, events, settings, and creates a life story for a man mentioned only briefly in the Bible.

We know little about those who surrounded and supported Jesus Christ during his remarkable ministry. The gospels are really just the bare bones of a story about one of the most powerful figures in history. There must have been many heroes and villains not mentioned in the New Testament. This is a fictional account of a lifelong supporter and friend of Jesus. Someone he relied on and turned to throughout his career. That person is Jesse, a man of action. Always prepared to go the extra mile for his Master, he did so at great personal cost. Jesus was crucified, but the person who rescues His ministry and creates his legacy is someone not mentioned or recognized in the scriptures. Raw emotion, violence, and biblical truths are all revealed. This story covers the saints and sinners of the day. From miracles to murder, its all here! You will be enthralled by the risks and relationships and constantly find yourself saying, What if . . .

With the distribution of Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ, it left many questions concerning some of the biblical figures, one of whom is Barabbas, who was spared by Pontius Pilate instead of Jesus. I, Barabbas looks at a different side of perhaps one of the most misunderstood persons in biblical history. Barabbas has been described as an insurrectionist against the Roman Empire. I, Barabbas depicts why he joined the rebellion.
