Excerpt from The Science of the Stars But When he tried to deal with the movements of the planets, he found that there were not enough good observations available for him to build up any satis factory theory. He therefore devoted himself to the work of making systematic determinations of the places of the planets that he might put his successors in a better position to deal with the problem than he was. Excerpt from The Study of the Stars The first accurate measures of the positions of the stars were made in the middle of the eighteenth century. The catalogue of Bradley in 1755 is even at the present time one of the best means of determining the early positions of the stars. A large number of Similar, but later, Observations by Hornsby are still unpublished. During the next hun dred years the meridian circle, which is at present the standard instru ment for determining the places of thegstars, was gradually evolved. In this instrument, a telescope is mounted so that it will point only to stars in the meridian, that is, to stars exactly north or south of the observer. The declinations of stars, corresponding to the latitude of points on the surface of the earth, are then measured by a finely gradu ated circle. Owing to the motion of the earth all stars cross the meridian twice during every twenty-four hours. The right ascension, corresponding to longitude, will be given by the time of transit. At first, this time was found by the eye and ear method in which the Observer counted the ticks of an accurate timepiece and compared them mentally with the instant at which the star appeared to cross a wire in the field of view of the telescope. About the middle of the nineteenth century a great advance was made by recording the time electrically on a chronograph. This method was known for many years as the Ameri can method, owing to its-introduction and general adoption in this country. This continued to be the standard method almost to the present time, and an enormous number of observations have been accumulated in this way, the total cost amounting to millions of dol lars. Perhaps the most valuable 'work of this kind is that of the Astronomische Gesellschaft, which, by international cooperation, secured accurate Observations of the positions of one hundred and sixty-six thousand stars. All stars of the ninth magnitude, and brighter, north of declination - 23° are included. Of the twenty zones, seven were Observed in Germany, four in the United States, three in Russia, one each in Algeria, Austria, England, Holland, Norway and Sweden. Of the American zones, one was observed at Albany, one at Washington. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from What We Know About the Stars Of course we do not mean to say that astron omy is so exact a science that all its problems are as demonstrable as a problem in Euclid. There are mere guesses connected with it, but these only surround its truths with a halo of romance. So far as real problems are solved it is an exact science. That the astronomers are enabled to cal culate, hundreds of years in advance, the precise moment of the transit of Venus across the Sun, or of an eclipse of the sun or moon, or when a cer tain comet is due to appear, only proves that facts have been acquired which are exact, and that the machinery of the heavens does not run on by chance but under fixed laws. Excerpt from Recent Advances in Astronomy Every writer of a popular work on Astronomy, or any other branch of science, must become largely indebted to those who have devoted their labour to the compilation of works of reference; and I would acknowledge my deep obligation to the ex tensive accumulation of accurate knowledge con tained in Miss Clerke's two works - A Histmy of Astronomy during the Nineteenth Century, and The System of the Stars. Excerpt from The Stars in Their Courses In giving a course of recent wireless talks, I assumed that my listeners had no previous scientific knowledge of any kind, and tried to introduce them to the fas cination of modern astronomy and to the wonder of the universe we see through the giant telescopes of to-day. The present book contains these talks expanded to double their original length, still in the informal con versational style and simple non-technical language of wireless talks. It is totally unambitious, aiming only at providing an easy, readable and not over serious introduction to the most poetical of the sciences. Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy As now arranged, the first chapters are devoted to a discus sion of the earth and its motions. They present splendid examples of the characteristics and methods of science, and amply illustrate the care with which scientific theories are established. The conclusions which are set forth are bound up with the development of science from the dawn of recorded history to the recent experiments on the rigidity and the elas ticity of the earth. They show how closely various sciences are interlocked, and how much an understanding of the earth depends upon its relations to the sky. They lead naturally to a more formal treatment of the celestial sphere and a study of the constellations. A familiarity with the brighter stars and the more conspicuous constellations is regarded as important. One who has become thoroughly acquainted with them will always experience a thrill when he looks up at night into a cloudless sky.
