Poison Island is an adventure after Robert Louis Stevenson. Harry Brooks is sent at age fourteen by his widowed father for a classical education at Mr. Stimcoe's Academy for the Sons of Gentlemen. Mr. Stimcoe is a drunk, and the school a travesty, but Harry meets the mysterious Captain Coffin. Coffin is building a ship to voyage to the Honduras, where he expects to find large amounts of gold, while avoiding the poison of the title. The Captain has a map, but is the treasure real, or a product of drunken imagination? Harry will find out.

London, 1812. When the crew of the 'Solander', a ship carrying rare specimens of plant from the paradise island of Otaheite, are found dead, their faces twisted into hideous expressions, Detective Charles Horton is put in charge of the investigation. It becomes clear that this is a mystery that began near the foot of great Tahiti Nui, in the shadow of a dead volcano, beneath the eyes of unforgiving ancient gods.

Excerpt from Poison Island It was in the dusk of a July evening of the year 1813 (July 27, to be precise) that on my way back from the mail-coach office, Falmouth, to Mr. Stimcoe's Academy for the Sons of Gentlemen, No. 7, Delamere Terrace, I first met Captain Coffin as he came, drunk and cursing, up the Market Strand, with a rabble of children at his heels. I have reason to remember the date and hour of this encounter, not only for its remarkable consequences, but because it befell on the very day and within an hour or two of my matriculation at Stimcoe's. That afternoon I had arrived at Falmouth by Royal Mail, in charge of Miss Plinlimmon, my father's housekeeper; and now but ten minutes ago I had seen off that excellent lady and waved farewell to her - not without a sinking of the heart - on her return journey to Minden Cottage, which was my home. My name is Harry Brooks, and my age on this remembered evening was fourteen and something over. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
