Excerpt from The Place-Names of Lancashire This book has been some twelve years in making. By the time Professor Wyld's book on Lancashire place-names appeared it had made good progress in fact, the material collected was on the whole fuller than his. My first thought, when I found I had been forestalled, was to drop the subject altogether. On further re flection it seemed to me, however, that certain aspects of the large subject might repay further study, and finally I decided to go on with my original plan, which included a full study of Lancashire place names. The publication of Mr. Sephton' s book two years later again caused some hesitation, but did not discourage me from going on. The book would probably have been published long ago had it not been for the war, which temporarily prevented the carrying out of a long-cherished project of going to Lancashire in order to form a personal acquaintance with the topo graphy of the district. It was not until the summer of 1920 that this plan could at last be executed. I then spent over two months in various parts of the county, and in 1921 I had the opportunity of spending a few more weeks there. The time at my disposal did not permit an equally full study of the whole district. Natur ally I gave rather more time to the north than to the industrialized south. Excerpt from The Place Names of Lancashire: Their Origin and History This book has taken nearly four years to bring to its present form. During this period I have been prevented by the some what exacting duties of teaching a large body of students, as well as by the claims of other literary work, from working continuously at the various problems connected with a study of place names, excepting during vacations. But for these causes this work might have been ready for the press perhaps two years ago. On the other hand so largo a subject as the Place Names of Lancashire might easily occupy the constant attention of a student for twenty years, so numerous, varied, and difficult are the problems which such an inquiry raises. I have felt drawn in two opposite directions. On the one hand was the temptation to continue adding illustrative material from the enormous mass of early records which is the glory and pride of this country, until the whole body of documents had been practically exploited to their utmost value, to search still further for early forms of Lancashire names, and to work yet longer at the origin of many names which are here left unexplained. On the other hand was the feeling that, in a work of this kind, to strive after completeness and perfection beyond a certain point is to pursue an alluring mirage which recedes further away as one thinks one has reached it, and the thought that it is perhaps more serviceable to knowledge to publish what is, after all, a not inconsiderable body of material, frankly confessing that many problems are still unsolved, that many early forms of names in other parts of England, which might have thrown light upon the origin of those which are our immediate concern, are still ungarnered from the pages of the documents which contain them. Excerpt from A Handbook of Lancashire Place-Names Eight or nine years since, I wrote for the fourth volume of the University Magazine, the Otia Merseiana, a little paper on the place-names of South Lancashire appearing in Domesday Book. The subject so attracted me, that after the publication of the essay I began to enlarge its scope by including all the words I could find of which old forms existed, of not later date than the fifteenth century. For this purpose I made use of the work on Lancashire Pipe Rolls and Charters brought out by Mr. Farrer two years before, and also the volumes published by the Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire. Among this series are several volumes, edited by Mr. Farrer, which were of exceptional value to me, on account of the care and accuracy which characterised them. Another work of untold value in place-name inquiries is the Onomasticon Anglo-Saxonicum of Mr. W. G. Searle. This is an almost complete list of English personal names. Second to it in importance is the Liber Vitae, an old catalogue of the benefactors of Durham Church, specially rich in North-country names. It was edited by Mr. Sweet for the Early English d104 Society. Recourse to these two books has rarely failed in finding any old name which forms a personal theme in place-names, and to them is due much of the information embodied in this handbook. I was thus enabled to make the original collection into one of about five hundred words, and the book was ready for publication at the end of 1907. Excerpt from Lancashire IT has been said, by one not prone to indulge in superlatives, that there are not, perhaps, in the king dom, two mountains more thoroughly pleasing to the eye than the Lancashire fells of the Old Man and Wetherlam. The same writer, in another place, has ventured the Opinion that of all the monastic ruins in Great Britain there is none which combines extent and beauty of detail to a greater degree than Furness. It was a river scene close to the Lancashire border that Ruskin - noting the wonderful com bination in it of moorland, hill, and Sweet river, and English forest-foliage - described as one of the loveliest in England, and therefore in the world; and it was in Lancashire, we may remember, that Ruskin found his own beautiful home, of which he wrote himself, on the occasion of his first visit in 1871 I think it gives the finest View I know in Cumberland or Lancashire.
