Excerpt from The Messiah in Moses and the Prophets From the earliest periods a belief has prevailed among Jews and Gentiles, that in one mode or another the Supreme Being has appeared visibly on earth In the Eastern World, Divine incarnations are taught in the Brahminical and other systems. For the origin of such a belief we must undoubtedly recur to the Divine appearances recorded in Moses and the prophets. Such visible appearances and the doctrine of the incarnation are taught in the Hebrew as well as in the Christian Scriptures. Eleazar Lord's "The Messiah in Moses and the Prophets" is a painstakingly researched and thought-provoking examination of the profound Messianic predictions contained throughout the sacred scriptures of the Hebrew Bible. Lord dives into the writings of Moses and the different prophetic books with scholarly rigor and theological insight to find the hidden treasures of Messianic expectation. Lord explains the ancient Jewish and Christian expectations of a predicted Messiah via painstaking study, tracking the progression of these ideas throughout history. He expertly contextualizes these predictions within their historical, cultural, and religious contexts, providing readers with a more complete appreciation of their significance. Lord's work bridges the divide between Judaism and Christianity by demonstrating how these common Messianic goals developed both faiths. His incisive insights and comprehensive methodology make this book a great resource for scholars, theologians, and anyone interested in how religious traditions interact. "The Messiah in Moses and the Prophets" is a tribute to Eleazar Lord's biblical studies competence and passion to unlocking the riddles of Messianic hope inside the sacred books. This book not only adds to our understanding of religious history, but it also asks readers to consider the long-lasting impact of Messianic prophecy on the faith and spirituality of millions around the world.

Excerpt from Moses and the Prophets: The Old Testament in the Jewish Church This volume does not pretend to discuss all questions pertaining to the Books of Moses and the Prophets. It is simply a reprint, with additions, of articles in review of the works named in the title, which appeared in the "Presbyterian Review" for October, 1881, and for January, 1882, and in the "Princeton Review," for July, 1878. The last is published as originally written, a few pages having been restored which were dropped to bring it within smaller compass. The Preliminary Remarks were delivered in September, 1881, as the opening lecture of the session in Princeton Theological Seminary. A few paragraphs have been added to the article entitled "Professor Robertson Smith on the Pentateuch," for the sake of greater fulness or clearness in the argument. The Old Testament both tells the story of Israel and points to the coming Messiah. Kaiser distinguishes between Old Testament passages that describe national Israel's glorious future and those that point to Christ and his kingdom. Kaiser's chronological approach traces Israel's developing concept of Messiah through different time periods.

This book seeks to demonstrate that those references to Christ are found in all of the Sciptures. On the glorious resurrection morning Mary went to seek for Jesus. She sought Him in the tomb, but He stood beside her. She thought He was the gardener, but the one word "Mary " revealed to her her Saviour. As we read some passage in the Old Testament how often our eyes are holden, and we see only the earthly form: we see Aaron the priest, or David the shepherd, or Solomon the king; but if, like Mary, we are really seeking the Lord Jesus, He manifests Himself to us through the outward type, and we turn in glad surprise, and, looking up, say, " Rabboni " (lit. my great One). As we continue to seek, we find Him in the least expected places of the Old Testament, until the whole grows luminous with the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. "In the volume of the book it is written of Me." All the lines of history and type, of Psalm and prophecy, converge towards one centre Jesus Christ, and to one supreme event. His death on the Cross for our salvation. And from that centre again all the lines of history in the book of Acts, of experience in the Epistles, and of prophecy in Revelation radiate out once more to testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. After His resurrection our Lord not only "opened the Scriptures" to His disciples, but also "opened their under- standing that they might understand the Scriptures." He is ready to do the same for us. The same Holy Spirit who moved holy men of old to write the Scriptures, is close at hand to make the words life to our souls, by taking of the things of Christ and revealing them unto us. Of the books of the New Testament only a brief summary is here given, partly because they are so much more studied, partly because to treat of them at any adequate length would swell this book beyond the limits of a single volume, and still more because the chief aim of the present Studies is to show that Christ is the Key to the Old Testament Scriptures.

We tend to look to the New Testament to tell us about Jesus, yet it was the Old Testament about which Jesus said, “the Scriptures point to me!” In The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie takes readers from Genesis through Malachi, shining the light of Christ on the promise of a descendent who will put an end to the curse of sin; the story of a father who offers up his son as a sacrifice; the symbol of a temple where people can meet with God; the prophecy of a servant who will suffer; the person of a king who will rule with righteousness—and so much more. Day by day throughout the year, readers will see the beauty of Christ in fresh new ways, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation for who Jesus is and what he accomplished through his Cross and Resurrection.
