This book uses examples from experimental studies to illustrate theoretical investigations, allowing greater understanding of hydrogen bonding phenomena. The most important topics in recent studies are covered. This volume is an invaluable resource that will be of particular interest to physical and theoretical chemists, spectroscopists, crystallographers and those involved with chemical physics.

With an in-depth look at the lives of 13 women of the Bible, this devotional takes you step-by-step on a journey of healing, self-discovery, and affirmation through 90 daily readings. Although separated by centuries, each woman's experience contains deeply embedded timeless truths applicable to us and our experiences today. In their stilled yet still living voices, we hear them testify that God was to them personal and loving, concerned and involved, as well as intimate and powerful. They challenge us to walk back along their paths of old and to search for hidden marks that point out where we can pause to gather strength, dig for encouragement, pick up insight, collect understanding, and harvest hope. I accepted their challenge and can now testify that all they say is true. . . Judith Warren Hawkins, founder of Gaza Road Ministries, has served as a county court judge since 1996 in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida. Gaza Road Ministries is her calling modeled after Philip's encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8. Judge Hawkins is a gifted teacher of Bible truths making plain the word of God so that "none need err" in the way of understanding and wisdom. She is a frequent speaker and presenter and has participated in numerous international mission programs. Judge Hawkins is married, the mother of one adult son, and grandmother of two young girls. http: //www.gazaroadministries.com/

Crystal engineering is an interdisciplinary area that cuts across the traditional subdivisions of chemistry. Fuelled by our increasingly precise understanding of the chemistry and properties of supramolecular systems, interest in the potential of the field has increased rapidly. The topics discussed in the 28 contributions in this book provide a state-of-the-art description of the field and offer new research ideas that, if pursued, will serve to strengthen the field at the interface between supramolecular chemistry and materials science.

Hydrogen bond (H-bond) effects are known: it makes sea water liquid, joins cellulose microfibrils in trees, shapes DNA into genes and polypeptide chains into wool, hair, muscles or enzymes. Its true nature is less known and we may still wonder why O-H...O bond energies range from less than 1 to more than 30 kcal/mol without apparent reason. This H-bond puzzle is re-examined here from its very beginning and presented as an inclusive compilation of experimental H-bond energies and geometries. New concepts emerge from this analysis: new classes of systematically strong H-bonds (CAHBs and RAHBs: charge- and resonance-assisted H-bonds); full H-bond classification in six classes (the six chemical leitmotifs); and assessment of the covalent nature of strong H-bonds. This leads to three distinct but inter-consistent models able to rationalize the H-bond and predict its strength, based on classical VB theory, matching of donor-acceptor acid-base parameters (PA or pKa), or shape of the H-bond proton-transfer pathway. Applications survey a number of systems where strong H-bonds play an important functional role, namely drug-receptor binding, enzymatic catalysis, ion-transport through cell membranes, crystal design and molecular mechanisms of functional materials.

This book defines, for the first time, the rules for predicting H-bond energies and geometries from the properties of the interacting molecules. This new knowledge is used to investigate the molecular mechanisms in systems relevant to chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, crystallography, and material sciences.

Modeling molecular structures is a useful tool for the description, classification and understanding of molecules – species, which have already been synthesized, and others existing only in the imagination of the chemist. The first part of the four–volume series ′Aspects of Organic Chemistry′ focuses on molecular structure, especially that of nucleid acids and proteins. The authors, a team of internationally recognized specialists, present a modern interdisciplinary concept between chemistry – and biology – an approach, which proved to be useful in university education. A unique book, important for both lecturers and students. Subjects of the three remaining volumes are ′Reactivity′, ′Synthesis′ and ′Methods of Structure Elucidation′.

Because of the importance of the hydrogen bond, there have been scores of insights gained about its fundamental nature by quantum chemical computations over the years. Such methods can probe subtle characteristics of the electronic structure and examine regions of the potential energy surface that are simply not accessible by experimental means. The maturation of the techniques, codes, and computer hardware have permitted calculations of unprecedented reliability and rivaling the accuracy of experimental data. This book strives first toward an appreciation of the power of quantum chemistry to analyze the deepest roots of the hydrogen bond phenomenon. It offers a systematic and understandable account of decades of such calculations, focusing on the most important findings. This book provides readers with the tools to understand the original literature, and to perhaps carry out some calculations of their very own on systems of interest.

Water and Biological Macromolecules presents an excellent description of the structural aspects of water molecules around biological macromolecules. Topics discussed include the properties of water in solid and liquid states; proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides, and lipids; and theoretical approaches for understanding the macroscopic observations and integrating microscopic descriptions. The nature and roles of hydration forces in macromolecular complexation and cell-cell interactions are explained, in addition to phenomena such as entropy-enthalpy compensation and the thermodynamic treatment of water bridging. Water and Biological Macromolecules will be a valuable reference for biophysicists, biochemists, and macromolecular biologists.
