Excerpt from The History of the Bible, Vol. 1 of 2 That a volume which makes sue demands upon the consideration of mankind at large should have attracted the closest scrutiny, wherever it has been known, cannot by any means surprise us. Excerpt from The English Bible, Vol. 1 of 2: An External and Critical History of the Various English Translations of Scripture, With Remarks on the Need of Revising the English New Testament The following pages have been written to tell the story of the English Bible, and it is a story of singular interest to all who speak the English tongue. No pains have been spared to present the narrative in its truth, and to disentangle it from conflicting statements and traditional errors. Many thanks are due to those who have gone before me. Mr. Lewis, in his "Complete History of the several Translations of the Holy Bible and New Testament into English," published in 1731, pointed the way. Yet, so little interest was the public supposed to feel in such a work, that his first edition consisted only of 140 copies in folio; and the presentiment was verified, for the sale was so very slow that the second edition, in octavo, did not appear till eight years afterwards. His book has many merits; its defects may be ascribed to the scantier knowledge of his time; but its blunders have led some noted historians far astray. Excerpt from Synopsis of the Books of the Bible, Vol. 1: Genesis, II Chronicles I propose giving in this work, of which Genesis is the commencement, a short synopsis of the principal sub jects of each book of the Bible, to aid in the study of this precious volume that our God has given to us. I do not at all pretend to give the full contents Of each book, but only (as God shall grant to me) a sort of index of the subjects, the divisions of the books by subjects, and (as far as I am enabled) the object of the Spirit of God in each part, hoping that it may aid others in reading the book of God. The Bible, in its object, is a whole, which presents to us God coming forth from His essential fulness to manifest all that He is, and to bring back into the enjoyment of this fulness with Himself those who, having been made partakers of His nature, have become capable of com prehending and loving His counsels and Himself. Excerpt from The History of the Bible With this account of the building of the temple, imperfect as it is, we should at once close the present chap ter, were we not anxious to meet certain difficulties which we are aware, from personal experience, must afl'ect the mind of the reader while perusing some of the foregoing details. The sacrifice of Saul's descendants, for example, to gratify the vindictive feelin s of the Gibeonites, as well as the arting admonitions of avid to Solomon, respecting J cab, himei, and others, have been felt by many reflecting persons to militate, in appearance at least, against the con sistency of the sacred chronicles while the nature of Da vid's sin in numbering the people, with the terrible conse quences that followed, are matters well calculated to perplex even the most sober-minded. We frankly acknowledge, that after consulting a host of commentators, we have not been able entirely to elucidate the mystery which attaches to some of these transactions; but of the fruits of our re searches, the following may be taken as a compend. Excerpt from Notes, Critical and Practical, on the Book of Genesis, Vol. 1 of 2: Designed as a General Help to Biblical Reading and Instruction A very slight inspection of the pages of the present work will disclose to the reader its general character, and enable him to judge how far it is likely to supply an existing desideratum. Little therefore need be said by way of preface. My main object has been to afford facilities for the correct understanding of the sacred text - to aid the student of the Bible in ascertaining, with the utmost practicable exactness, the genuine sense of the original. With such an object in view it was perhaps impossible to avoid giving the work an aspect predominantly critical. But an apology on this score can scarcely be requisite at the present day, when the claims of sacred philology are beginning to be so highly appreciated; when at is so generally admitted that the grand aim of the Scriptural expositor should be to fix with the most absolute precision the 'mind of the Spirit' in his own word; and when it is so well understood that this end can be attained only by means of a familiar acquaintance with the original in its verbal and idiomatic peculiarities, its parallel usages, and its archaeological illustrations. Besides, unless I have come wholly short of my aim, there will be found such a union of the practical with the critical, as to adapt the present and the ensuring volumes somewhat happily to popular use. Should this prove not to be case, I shall feel that the failure has been rather in the execution, than in the plan; for I know no reason to suppose the two departments intrinsically incompatible, or that the two-fold function of the exegetical and the ethical expositor may not be united in the same person About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Analyzed Bible, Vol. 1: Genesis to Esther So much concerning the writer and his methods. Now a word with my readers as to purpose and method. As to the first, I am profoundly convinced that one of the gravest perils of this hour of increased interest is that of a merely carnal desire for the technical knowledge of the con tent of Scripture. Unless those who devote themselves to the study of the Word zealously and ceaselessly watch and pray, the very de light of discovering the system will become a paramount motive, and wherever this is so, it results in disastrous failure, and an actual peril to Spiritual life. In these volumes I need hardly say the Bible is to be treated as Divine. It is a volume of the Oracles of God. Excerpt from The Bible and Its Story: Taught by One Thousand Picture Lessons Before the coming Of Christ, the Jewish priesthood had already divided their sacred books, that is, the books of the Old Testament, into three classes. First came the Law, the five books of Moses, the most venerated Of all. Then came the Prophets, and then the Hagiographa or holy writings, such as Psalms and Proverbs. The books Of the prophets were divided into the Former Prophets and the Latter Prophets. The historical books from Joshua through II Kings formed the Former Prophets. With these were later included the other historical books that immediately follow there in the modern arrangement Of the Bible, from Chronicles through Esther and this entire group are now usually called the Historical Books, though no such division is adopted in the Hebrew Bible.
