Excerpt from The Family Magazine, or Monthly Abstract of General Knowledge, 1837-8, Vol. 5 From the first settlement of this place, it has con tinned to increase gradually in population and busi ness. New accessions have been made yearly by emigrants from Massachusets and Connecticut, and some from the eastern part of this state. It was with much difficulty that they made their way through the wilderness to this then new settlement. The early settlers were industrious, frugal, and moral; and a large preportion of them, religious people, who were proverbial for their friendly intercourse, and acts of kindness and hospitality to each other and to. New comers. Several of the first inhabitants have remarked to me, that, notwithstanding the 'de privations they had to endure, those were happy days. Under God, we are indebted in no small de gree, to those Pilgrims for the distinguished, reli gions, moral, and intellectual rivilegss, which, people, we now enjoy, and or the good order that prevails throughout our community. Excerpt from The Family Magazine, or Monthly Abstract of General Knowledge, 1843, Vol. 1 The conclusions to be deduced from the foregoing considerations are, that the existing state of things ha not been eternal, and consequently, that we are to look for a beginning to history; that the general agreement subsisting between the Mosaic cosmogony and those of the various nations of the world, some of whom, from time immemorial have had no communication with one another, shows, that one has not copied from another. But that they must have derived their ideas from one common, ancestral source; that th superiority of the Mosaic account to the traditions w ich have a general agreement with it, shows the former to be the ceramics! One; that its immense superiority to those of the wisest philosophers of antiquity, gives it a decided preference as a system, to theirs; and that its agreement with rea son and philosophy. Relative to the great particular of the direct origination of things by an omnipotent Being. Without the intervention of a chain of intermediate causes, entitles it to credence on its own intrinsic merits, independent of its superiority to others. To sum up the whole in a single sentence, there is reason to believe that the Mosaic account of the creation of the universe, contained in the first chapter of Genesis, is authentic.
