Excerpt from History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Under the same limitations the plan was formed about the different States. It was to give the origin of the church in each State, with as much fullness of detail as could well be secured, extending the record only to the organization of the first presbytery, closing that chapter with a rapid summary view of the present condition of our church in that part of the field. There were certain subjects belonging to 'all periods to which special chapters were reserved, to be placed at the last of the book; and if they brought out any thing further from the work of our people in any particular State, at any later period, all well; and if not, there would be no further notice taken of that portion of the church. The question of brief biographical sketches was also care fully weighed, and finally decided in the negative. To this decision an exception was made in the case of those gener ally called the fathers of the church. If a biography formed part of the very thread of the history which I was writing, just so far was it also made a part of this volume. There were placed in my hands some very interesting biographies which contained no Single item that could be used accord ing to my established programme of operations. Excerpt from Reasons Why: The Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America Should Be United Because, whether the Presbyterian Church has radically revised its creed, as many of them admit, or has only ex plained it, as some of them claim, that creed now contains practically-everything for which Cumberland Presbyterians have contended, hence there remains no sufficient reason for continued separation. Excerpt from The Old Log House: A History and Defense of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church The greater portion of this little book was written several years ago, but, until now, the author could never get his consent to publish it. Soon after the publication of the Sabbath-School Gem was commenced, the idea was conceived that the members in general, and the youth in particular, of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, needed a small work which would not only give the history of said Church, but would also give the points of difference between it and other denominations. The idea was soon afterwards put into execution; and, by devoting Saturday evening of each week to the matter in hand, the greater part of the book was written. Excerpt from Why Am I A Cumberland Presbyterian? Has permitted this great spiritual family to be divided into different subordinate families. Of course, in establishing our relations to the Church for ourselves, a choice is to be made. We select one family, one branch of the Church, rather than another. We have reasons for such a choice. These reasons may be wise and weighty; on the other hand, they may deserve but little considera tion; still they are reasons with us. We consider our action intelligent, and they are reasons which influence that action. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Illinois, Containing Sketches of the First Ministers, Churches, Presbyteries and Synods: Also a History of Missions, Publication and Education Death knocks with certain footsteps alike at the palace of the rich and the hut of the poor; at the counting-room of the merchant and the study of the man of God. His knock is imperative; and the rich and the poor, the merchant and the man of God, must as certainly answer. On the 14th of September, 1878, the Editor of this History threw down the gauntlet and gave up life's struggle. The course for him then ended; the race for him was run. Sad as every visitation of the dark messenger is, it is infinitely more so when a useful man is stricken down in his usefulness. On account of the unexpected death of the Editor, the foregoing volume is imperfect in some respects. Just what his intention was in reference to this work is not fully known; but it has been carried out so far as ascertained. He evidently intended to prepare a full statistical table for the entire State, showing the numerical and financial strength of the denomination. Other matters of great interest he may have also intended to include in the volume. But he has gone, and there is no means of discovering the intended scope of the work. What is published is just as he left it, with no material alterations. The work is sent out with the hope that it may strengthen the bonds of the Church of God, re-animate and stimulate it, and glorify Him whose humble messenger the Editor was. May the blessings of Heaven go with it! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Why? When? What?: A Brief Statement of the Origin, Progress, and Differentiating Doctrines of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church In October, 1804, the minority of the Presbytery, led by Rev. Thos. Craighead, carried their fight into the Ken tucky Synod, charging the majority with ecclesiastical irregularity and doctrinal unsoundness. The Svnod cited, both parties to appear before it at its'next meeting, and also appointed a committee to attend the earliest meeting of Cumberland Presbytery and inquire into the case and report to the Synod. None of the revival ministers obeyed the citation. They denied the Synod's right to arraign presbyters before its bar or to interfere with a Presbytery's prerogative in licensing and ordain ing ministers.
