Too often Christmas gets swallowed up in the busyness of shopping and sending cards and wrapping presents. As we rush around, we often miss the wonder of what Christmas is all about. Christmas began with a gift given to the human race two thousand years ago. It was a child, born in a Bethlehem stable and laid in a manger. His birth was announced by wise men guided from the East by a very special star. It was the gift we needed most: a Savior, the Holy Son of God. This is the good news proclaimed by the angel: "Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:10-11). Why was God's gift of a Savior so important? There are three reasons: The greatness of the need. The future of the human race was at stake. Sin made havoc of God's creation and brought estrangement from its Creator. The greatness of the gift. Not only was the need great, but the gift was also great! "This is My beloved Son," God said, "in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17). The greatness of the cost. Read the inspired portraits of the suffering of Christ in Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, and Psalm 69. The cross was only part of the price He gladly paid. Jesus Christ did not die for His own sins or because He was a victim of circumstances. He came, as God's supreme gift to you and me. The Bible pointedly asks: "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?" (Hebrews 2:3). Have you overlooked the really important gift of Christmas? Is God prompting you to look through the odds and ends of Christmas? God's gift for you is waiting. Don't miss it. Right now, wherever you are, you can receive the costliest gift, Jesus Christ the Savior. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

The Knowing the Bible series is a new resource designed to help Bible readers better understand and apply God’s Word. Each 12-week study leads participants through one book of the Bible and is made up of four basic components: (1) Reflection questions designed to help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlighting the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” showing how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identifying how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. With contributions from a wide array of influential pastors and church leaders, these gospel-centered studies will help Christians see and cherish the message of God’s grace on each and every page of the Bible. In this accessible study, pastor and author Greg Gilbert examines the message of James, exploring the book’s difficult teachings on wealth, anointing with oil, prayer, healing, and the relationship between faith and works. Through clear exposition of the biblical text and challenging application questions, Gilbert helps readers rightly understand James as a stirring exhortation to fruitfulness, ultimately written to remind Christians of the necessary connection between genuine faith and heartfelt obedience.

In many ways, James is the forgotten epistle of the New Testament. Throughout church history the Epistle of James has encountered struggle, opposition and just plain neglect. In the period of the early church, it struggled to receive full acceptance in the canon of Scripture. At the time of the Reformation, it faced fierce opposition, particularly from the great Reformer Martin Luther. Luther dismissed the epistle outright, referring to it as an epistle of straw. Luther also charged that James mangles the Scriptures and thereby opposes Paul and all Scripture. In our modern age, James has suffered from both lay and scholarly neglect. When it comes to the New Testament epistles, the writings of Paul, Peter and John garner most of the attention. James and his epistle have been largely ignored and neglected throughout history. This is unfortunate, because it has much to say to us particularly regarding the crucial subject of the Christian life. Perhaps no other letter in the New Testament so comprehensively addresses the Christian life as does the Epistle of James. It is the purpose of this book to explore the Christian life through the panoramic lens of this grand epistle.

"Moments before his death following a tragic car accident, Nick whispers warnings to his wife that someone from his past may attempt to harm or even kill her. He urges her to travel to Philadelphia to his childhood home. Find James, he insists. It's the only way out. Mackenzie dismisses her husband's warnings, assuming his words were a result of blood loss and morphine--until the things he outlined start to come true. Her search brings her to the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia and face to face with a mother-in-law believed to be dead. Together in the same house the two women's stories spin together, each with an agenda. Cora is desperate to protect secrets from the past. Mackenzie is determined to uncover those very secrets and find the elusive James before time runs out. A gallery of photographs in the bowels of the house holds clues to generations of abuse, treachery and possibly murder. Messages hidden in Nick's childhood Bible within the Epistle of James have Mackenzie racing against time to put the pieces together, unearth the reasons her husband chose to vanish when he was sixteen years old, and locate the person mentioned in Nick's dying breath. When James is finally found, the results are more horrifying than Mackenzie could have ever imagined."--fantasticfiction.com.
