Excerpt from The American Biblical Repository, Vol. 5: Devoted to Biblical and General Literature, Theological Discussion, the History of Theological Opinions, Etc.; Nos. IX, X; Whole Nos. XLI, XLII The principal books containing the church services of the Nestorians are the followin 1. Alternate prayers for each day in two weeks (kdam Dooatia). 2. Prayers for every day in the year except the Sabbath and festivals (keshlcool). 3. Prayers for the Lard's day and other festivals (hoodra). 4. Prayers for festivals not in Lent (gezza). 5. Services for the com munion, ordination, baptism and consecration of churches stakhsa). 6. Legends of the Saints, read in the churches win some of the fasts (werda). 7. Marria e services (ba rrdctai 8. Funeral services (caseda). A smafi Romish legend is also found among them, claiming to be an epistle that descended from heaven at Rome, about the year A. D. 777, being engraved by the finger of God on a table of ice! After detar ing a pompous array of signs and wonders that attended its descent, it proceeds to enjoin the observance of the laws of God and of the church, and denounces fearful threatenings on the disobedient. It is entitled, The Epistle of the Sabbath (flgertha d'hosheeba), i. E. It descended on the Sabbath, and demands a reading every Sabbath. It is very little used by the Nestorians. Reciting the Psalms comprises a very con siderable part of the daily church service of the Nestorians. The Gospels are also read, particularly on the Sabbath and on festival occasions. The Epistles and the Old Testament, though less fr uently, are read in their churches. The estorians have a book containing the laws and canons of their church They have also some of the writings of the Fathers (avahatha), and traditions (t thee); Books of Martyrs (sadee); and Commentaries (noo haree) on all portions of the Scriptures, some of which are very entertaining and instructive, but others are equally puerile. Excerpt from The American Biblical Repository, Vol. 6: Devoted to Biblical and General Literature, Theological Discussion, the History of Theological Opinions, Etc I have said that it can be proved from reason, script on E, and history, that the primitive state of the human race was civilized. I have shown how reason, prior to any investiga tion Of facts, confirms the position, and how unreasonable is every other hypothesis. I have exhibited the scriptural ac count of man's creation; and exposed the absurdity of sup posing that he could have proceeded from the hand of an infinitely wise, good and powerful Bein mature in his corpn real faculties, and yet destitute Of menta furniture, or deficient in wisdom and intellect. Or, in other words, that he Should have been formed only afull - grown infant and, in that help less condition, have been left by his Creator to grope his way in this new world, friendless, ignorant, unprotected - Without a guide or instructor to aid in the gradual development of his rational powers, and in the attainment of that knowled e and skill which his situation imperiously demanded from the egin ning; and without which he must either soon have perished. Excerpt from The American Biblical Repository, Vol. 12: Devoted to Biblical and General Literature, Theological Discussion, the History of Theological Opinions, Etc.; Nos. 23, 24; Whole Nos. 55, 56 Sacred music as a divine institution, was not destined, like the ancient Jewish ritual, to decay. It is to stand while time endures, as a lively representation of the worship of the sanc tuary above. Nor can we doubt that it will yet be seen to operate more efficiently than ever, in enlivening the devotions of the sincere worshipper. That there is something wrong in the present manner of sustaining it, is freely admitted. Indeed, there is so much which is wrong, that it seems difficult to deter mine where to begin or to end the recital. But it is not our present object to speak of the number and character of abuses. A more. Delicate task lies before us, and one which we lmpe will prove on the whole more beneficial. We shall endeavor to dis cover to our readers the principal source of these abuses, and point out the only sure and practical remedy.
