Excerpt from A System of Christian Ethics: Based on Martensen and Harless In a certain sense this presentation is an abridgement of Martensen's work, and still it contains far more than that famous production. Martensen is more philosophical than biblical, and in this aspect of the subject, the great work of Harless completes him. What is best and most impor tant in the presentation of Harless, has, therefore, also been incorporated in this treatise. The aim has been not simply to reproduce these great works, but so to use the material, and rewrite it, that what is here written, the au thor believes to be the plain teaching of God's Word with reference to the duties of the Christian here on earth. No pains have been spared to master the contents of this sci ence, and the writer would here especially express his great indebtedness to the works of Frank, Dorner, Wuttke, Schmid, Sartorius, and Vilmar. Excerpt from Manual of Systematic Theology, and Christian Ethics In this treatise, all the doctrines of the Christian religion are supposed to be drawn from the Scriptures, and set forth in their logical order, so that they may stand before the mind as a system of religious truth. Yet many facts here put together are revealed but in part, and therefore their agreement with one another can be seen but in part. A perfect system pre supposes perfect knowledge in him who describes it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Christian Ethics The difficulty of compressing Christian Ethics into a. Few pages will be duly appreciated only by those who are acquainted with the subject. There are, also, many pit falls of treatment, which prove disastrous to the unwary. Two of them, at any rate, I have tried to avoid, (1) swamping Christian Ethics in Christian Theology, and (2) separating the two provinces so absolutely as to convey the impression that they have no relation to each other. I have, further, endeavoured to respect the sense of proportion in the topics handled. Beyond this, I need make no explanation. The little treatise must explain itself. "Philosophy has been defined as 'thinking things together. ' Every man, says Hegel, is a philosopher, and in so far as it is the natural tendency of the human mind to connect and unify the manifold phenomena of life, the paradox of the German thinker is not without a measure of truth. But while this is only the occasional pastime of the ordinary individual, it is the conscious and habitual aim of the philosopher. In daily life people are wont to make assumptions which they do not verify, and employ figures of speech which of necessity are partial and inadequate. "

Excerpt from Christian Ethics: Special Part; Second Division: Social Ethics The moral life of society is developed in the Family and I the State; in the mid-regions or departments of Culture, Art, and Science; and, lastly, in the Church, whose inmost core is the Communion of saints. These several social organisms are to be regarded, on the one hand, as possessions, and hence as realized aims, in which man finds satisfaction, profit, pleasure; on the other, as moral individuals on a large scale, having each its special office to discharge. And I, the small individual, am to be a personal member of one and another of these social circles, to occupy with respect to them a relation at once of co-operation and appropriation, of toleration and devotion, while constantly aiming at my own perfection and the perfection of the whole. One essential side of man's destination is displayed in each of the social circles, and the purpose of Christianity is to develope the "new man" within each. It is in proportion as the Christian ideal of human nature is realized in them, that the kingdom of God attains a social, and at the same time an individual, appearance on earth. The kingdom of God, however, neither does nor can attain its perfection in this world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
