The papers in this book were presented at the Third International Symposium on Redox Mechanisms and Interfacial Properties of Molecules of Biological Importance held in Honolulu, Hawaii between October 19-23, 1987. This Symposium was held as part of the 172nd Meeting of The Electrochemical Society which was cosponsored by The Electrochemical Society of Japan with the cooperation of The Japan Society of Applied Physics. The aim of the Symposium was to bring together a group of electrochemists and bio-medical scientists with interests in electrochemistry from around the world to present their most current research results and/or to present up-to-date reviews of current areas of research activity. Electron-transfer reactions at solid-liquid interfaces play important roles in numerous environmentally and technologically relevant processes. Since these reactions have potential for great societal benefit or environmental harm, it is necessary to understand their mechanisms. This thesis presents two projects centered on understanding interfacial redox chemistry.Electrochemical formation of high-energy species such as hydroxyl radicals (8́9OH) is a promising form of water purification but is inefficient because oxidation of H2O to form O2 is more thermodynamically favored. Diamond is widely used as an electrode material for generating 8́9OH because it has a large kinetic overpotential for O2 production and is extremely stable. Yet, the underlying mechanisms of O2 and 8́9OH production at diamond electrodes are not well understood. We discuss how we used surface analysis and electrochemical techniques to elucidate mechanisms for oxidation of water to O2 and 8́9OH on diamond, and how the addition of a hydrophobic monolayer preferentially increases efficiency for 8́9OH generation. High valence metal-oxides such as LiCoO2 are of environmental importance because of their increasing use as cathodes in lithium ion batteries. Dissolution and other environmental impact of these materials depends on Co redox state, which implies interaction of LiCoO2 with biologically relevant electron transporters such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and glutathione (GSH). By studying both the dissolution of LiCoO2 and other nanomaterials, and the redox state of NADH and GSH, we discovered that the nanomaterials and molecules transformed one another via redox chemistry.
