Woven into the exquisite tapestry of this lovely book is history and theory of the method, rich case material told in a warm and moving voice which reflects the extraordinary empathy of this remarkable sandplay and play therapist . . . A wealth of information packed into a highly readable book that just like the author herself will be a cherished gift to us all for a long time to come. —David A. Crenshaw, Ph.D., ABPP, RPT-S Clinical Director "The metaphor that comes to mind as I read this book is that of the aboriginal painting—a large canvas of lots of varied sized and colored dots which represents a map of the territory. This book provides an extensive map of the territory, that is Play Therapy, Child Therapy and sand play as it applies to children, with a particular Jungian slant. I would recommend this to practitioners and students who can learn from its wisdom." —Aideen Taylor de Faoite, author of Narrative Play Therapy: Theory and Practice. "When Pixies Come Out to Play is a wonderful book for any clinician who uses creative mediums in their therapeutic work. It is a book that provides a back drop to understanding art therapy, play therapy and sandplay from a Jungian perspective. It provides a history and theoretical framework to create context and a lens to view the work through." —Majella Ryan, Biodynamic and Integrative Psychotherapist, Child Psychotherapist.

C .G. and Emma Jung recognized that Dora Kalff had an unusual ability to relate to children and their inner lives and so encouraged her to extend Jung's work to the treatment of children. Kalff brought to this endeavor her experience as a student of languages (including Sanskrit and Chinese), classical piano, and Eastern contemplative practices. She traveled from her native Switzerland to London, where she studied with Margaret Lowenfeld and was influenced by her contacts with D.W. Winnicott.Kalff developed a way of working she called "Sandspiel" or "sandplay." This method introduced a shallow sandbox in which the patient could arrange the sand in whatever form expressed itself from within, with or without the addition of miniatures. In this book, Kalff presents nine case studies, which include sandplay in the therapeutic work. She conveys the importance of the therapist's empathic acceptance of the patient, creating a "free and protected space," as well as the experience required to understand and be affected by symbolic reflections of inner dilemmas and to recognize the psychic organization represented by the patient in the sand.

A central theme is the nature of the image in supervision, defining its difference from other forms of supervision in the mental health professions. Clinical practice is brought to life through vivid vignettes from diverse settings with a variety of client groups. part I establishes a theoretical base, introducing innovations in practice and addressing complex clinical issues in child and adult work. Topics include the narrative of imagery in supervision, enchantment, ambivalence, a topographical approach, engagement in supervision, and working with the network in art psychotherapy with children part II focuses on supervision in groups addressing training, difference and peer group image consultation, as well as supervision of experienced practitioners part III explores theory related to purposes and challenges in supervision and research. A vital contribution to the literature in the context of Continuing Professional Development, this volume establishes the image as central in the supervision of art psychotherapists. It brings the experience of the artist in the psychotherapist into the frame, provoking questions about the meaning of images and image making in supervision.
