The purpose of this study is to learn the true status of the rural teacher in Pennsylvania. The study is restricted for the most part to the facts and conditions pertaining to the teachers in the one-teacher schools. In some instances data will be given regarding the teachers in two-teacher schools, villages, and boroughs, either for the purpose of helping to verify the conclusions concerning the teachers in the one teacher schools. or merely to show contrasts and significant similarities. As to scope. this study endeavors to collect all the data possible relating to: (1) the personal social and economic status of the teacher; (2) conditions under which the work is conducted; (3) academic and professional preparation and training; (4) certification; (5) experience in teaching and tenure; and (6) salary.
