Excerpt from Southern Echoes Few, very few now are the genuine old time plantation darkies. The old colored retainer is almost a thing of the past and his passing might serve for the theme of an interesting bit of sectional history. Silently and slowly the great throng of them have gone, leaving nothing but a memory in the place once theirs. Yet no obituaries are written, telling how they have lain down the shovel and the hoe, in very truth; just a few of them are left and their fidelity deserves endless praise. The dialect too, of these dark-skinned comedies and tragedies of the old times is pas sing, and the less pleasing, less picturesque speech of the school-bred darky is taking its place. Excerpt from Echoes From the Battlefield or Southern Life During the War After a lapse of many years a retrospective mood possessed my thoughts, and for abrief period I was no longer a man but a boy full of life, and was once more playing with other children on the grounds of the old homestead, enjoying myself as only a healthy lad can; and while thus musing every scene in the grand but cruel panorama of war passed rapidly before my vision and tempted me so strongly that I could not resist the temptation to write and leave to my only child a true record of events as they occurred during that stormy period of our civil war. This is the only apology I can offer for this faulty little publication; but since it is finished, I now offer it to all who are willing to pass its imperfections by; and hope that some of its readers who were so fortunate as to escape the realities of war may by its perusal glean something of interest. And may some of the characters in it be found worthy of emulation. I have added some very beautiful poems by the best of authors, which will be found ex. Excerpt from Confederate Echoes: A Voice From the South in the Days of Secession and of the Southern Confederacy To Prof. Granville Goodloe, M.A., the firstborn of the twelve children of my wife and me, who was born January 23, 1857, this book is affectionately dedicated, as an expression of our appreciation of the loving obedience and respect he has always shown his parents, both in childhood and in manhood; the financial help he has afforded them from time to time as they had need, especially in the education of their eight children born since the War, as he followed his life work of teaching in training schools and colleges; the definite purpose he has ever had, and carried out, of giving the students under him a clear understanding of the significance and conduct of the war waged by Abraham Lincoln against our Southland; and his intense and unabated devotion to our Southern Confederacy and its defenders. Israel’s exodus from Egypt is the Bible’s enduring emblem of deliverance. But more than just an epic moment, the exodus shapes the telling of Israel’s and the church’s gospel. In this guide for biblical theologians, preachers, and teachers, Bryan Estelle traces the exodus motif as it weaves through the canon of Scripture, wedding literary readings with biblical-theological insights.
