Download South Africa as a Multi-Ethnic Society Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The author looks at South Africa as a society whose multiple ethnic identities collectively constitute what is probably the most dynamic and most productive country on the continent. The country's ethnic diversity is a source of strength. It also poses challenges, although South Africa has not fractured along ethnic lines as some countries have. The work is also a telescopic survey of the country's history, geography and cultural landscape, providing a comprehensive picture of this vibrant nation whose population includes immigrants from other parts of the continent who have flocked into South Africa in large number since the end of apartheid. Their presence in "the rainbow nation" has also been a source of tension between the immigrants and black South Africans, especially in the poverty-stricken townships across the country. The immigrants have also contributed to the nation's ethnic and cultural diversity which is one of the prominent features of the South African society. The book may serve members of the general public who are learning about South Africa for the first time. It may also be helpful to students including those going to South Africa. Those who specialise in South Africa may also find this work to be useful.

Download Ethnic Diversity and Federalism Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
How federalism can be used to provide recognition and accommodate ethnic groups is an important topic, not only in Africa, but in multi-ethnic communities around the world. Examining how institutions of multi-ethnic states have been designed to accommodate ethnic diversity while at the same time maintaining national unity, this book locates institutional responses to the challenges of ethnic diversity within the context of a federal arrangement. It examines how a federal arrangement has been used to reconcile the conflicting pressures of the demand for the recognition of distinctive identities, on the one hand, and the promotion of political and territorial integrity, on the other. Comparative case studies of South Africa and Ethiopia as the two federal systems provide a contrasting approach to issues of ethnic diversity. Suggesting new ways in which federalism might work, the author identifies key institutions lessons which will help to build an all-inclusive society.

Download Taking Ethno-Cultural Diversity Seriously in Constitutional Design Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Despite decades of nation-building exercise, ethnic-based claims for substantive equality, justice and equitable political inclusion and socio-economic order continue to result in communal rivalries. These are claims that define and represent the issue of minorities in Africa, of which these conflicts are manifestations. Although ethnic conflicts in Africa have been a subject of a large number of studies, the potential and role of norms on minority rights to address claims that ethno-cultural groups raise has not received the attention it deserves. Based on materials from normative political theory and international human rights law and using an empirical and prescriptive analysis, this book defends a robust system of minority rights built around culture, equality and self-determination. This is employed to elaborate an adequate constitutional design providing policy frameworks (multilingual language policy, recognition and affirmation of cultural diversity,), structures (that ensure just representation and participation of members of all groups) and norms (that guarantee substantive equality and the rights to language, religion and culture). The study then proffers two cases studies (South Africa and Ethiopia) to ascertain how such constitutional design might be translated into actual policy frameworks, institutions and norms.

Download The Identification of a Multi-ethnic South African Typology Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The aim of this study was to discover whether a value-based typology could be established that was applicable to all South African adults. It was predicated on the basis of a literature review and previous research findings that there were two major underlying dimensions of values: collectivism versus individualism and inner- versus outer-directed. The parameters of these dimensions were hypothesised within the framework of a common social structure, based on a number of related propositions. It was also hypothesised that the South African adult population consisted of five types. Five value measures were examined and found to have disadvantages for South Africa. A value measurement technique had been developed in South Africa for an on-going study titled Sociomonitor. The core of this study was the measurement of values of relevance to marketing and media. Over the period 1976 to 1993 separate value based typologies were identified for urban Blacks and Whites. In 1995 both races were covered in the same year and a common typology was found. In 1997/8 Sociomonitor was extended to the total adult population of South Africa. Respondents were sub-divided into Collectivism, Individualism, Inner- and Outer-directed groups. The characteristics of which were found to be substantially as had been expected. South African adults were categorised into five value types. Three of which were as had been hypothesised, two were in place of one of the five anticipated and one wasn't found. It is concluded that the values of adults from all ethnic groups fall within the parameters of collectivism versus individualism and inner- versus outer-directed. Furthermore, there are five different value types in the South African adult population that transcend ethnic boundaries. The implications of a multi-ethnic typology for marketing, social and political decision-making, research and the formulation of scenarios are outlined. It is recommended that this type of research be extended to other African countries and small communities.

Download Language Policy and Nation-Building in Post-Apartheid South Africa Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The preamble to the post-apartheid South African constitution states that ‘South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity’ and promises to ‘lay the foundations for a democratic and open society in which government is based on the will of the people and every citizen is equally protected by law’ and to ‘improve the quality of life of all citizens’. This would seem to commit the South African government to, amongst other things, the implementation of policies aimed at fostering a common sense of South African national identity, at societal dev- opment and at reducing of levels of social inequality. However, in the period of more than a decade that has now elapsed since the end of apartheid, there has been widespread discontent with regard to the degree of progress made in connection with the realisation of these constitutional aspirations. The ‘limits to liberation’ in the post-apartheid era has been a theme of much recent research in the ?elds of sociology and political theory (e. g. Luckham, 1998; Robins, 2005a). Linguists have also paid considerable attention to the South African situation with the realisation that many of the factors that have prevented, and are continuing to prevent, effective progress towards the achievement of these constitutional goals are linguistic in their origin.

Download Race and Reconciliation in South Africa Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
In the mid-1990s the Truth and Reconciliation Commission disclosed its findings on the awful reality of the apartheid era in South Africa. The Commission inspired scholars from Europe, North America, and South Africa to convene a group of their own, to investigate in multicultural, scholarly dialogue the history, theology, philosophy, and politics of race and reconciliation in South Africa. This volume is the product of that important dialogue. And while the focus is the particular environment of South Africa, the contributors work within a comparative perspective, using examples from other nations and cultures to explore that which makes South Africa unique. Ultimately, the book aims to offer not only a better understanding of the depth of injustice in South Africa's past, but also a deeper appreciation for the achievement of the present and the promise of the future--in South Africa and in every other multiethnic region in the world.
