The news is not good for black women when it comes to finding a partner. Where not long ago there were roughly two married women to every single woman, those numbers have gradually reversed over the past few decades--now, more than 60 percent of black women have either never married or are divorced. These numbers are far greater than those of any other social group, and the trend shows no sign of reversing. Mathis brings the skills of an astute veteran journalist and the passions of an attentive and articulate storyteller to uncovering the truths in single black women’s lives today. Sole Sisters is certain to ignite public debate on how and why so many black women remain single and spark discussion as to what semi-permanent singlehood means for so many.

More than 11 million women run regularly, a number that's growing every year. They tend to be educated and affluent-the perfect audience for Sole Sisters. Half of all runners are women, and they are changing the face of the sport. It's a social outlet, a healthful way to improve mental well-being, and an opportunity to form bonds with like-minded women. Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running is a gripping collection of stories that captures the inspirational heart of the women's running. Authors Jennifer Lin and Susan Warner have interviewed women of all ages from all walks of life and all parts of the country. All of their subjects have one thing in common: Running has transformed them. There are both heartrending stories of grief and survival and lighthearted tales of friendship. Among them are: * Sisters who competed in a 5K race to honor a sister who survived breast cancer. * A 9/11 widow who ran her first marathon to honor the memory of her husband. * A 65-year-old woman who overcame obesity and alcoholism to finish the grueling Ironman triathlon. * An unknown runner from Norway named Grete Waitz who decided to run a marathon-and changed the face of the sport. Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running is not just for women who run. It appeals to all women who know what it means to have the support of others who share their trials and triumphs. Sole Sisters: Stories of Women and Running is sometimes touching, sometimes funny, and always inspiring.

Soul Sisters by Lesley Lokko is a rich, intergenerational tale of love, race, power and secrets which centres on the lifelong friendship between two women: Scottish Jen McFadden and South African-born Kemisa Mashabane, known to her friends as Kemi. Since childhood, Jen and Kemi have lived like sisters in the McFadden family home in Edinburgh, brought together by a shared family history which stretches back generations. Kemi was educated in Britain alongside Jen and the girls could not be closer; nor could they be more different in the paths they take in life. But the ties that bind them are strong and complicated, and a dark family secret exists in their joint history. Solam Rhoyi is from South Africa’s black political elite. Handsome, charismatic, charming, and a successful young banker, he meets both Kemi and Jen on a trip to London and sweeps them off their feet. Partly influenced by her interest in Solam, and partly on a journey of self-discovery, Kemi, now 31, decides to return to the country of her birth for the first time. Jen, seeking an escape from her father’s overbearing presence, decides to go with her. In Johannesburg, it becomes clear that Solam is looking for the perfect wife to facilitate his soaring political ambitions. But who will he choose? All the while, the real story behind the two families’ connection threatens to reveal itself – with devastating consequences . . .

Too often in this world, hatred, violence, and ugliness saturate our twenty-four-hour news cycle, capture our attention on city streets, and stain our view of human kind. But kindness, love, mercy, and compassion are stronger than all this negativity and evil combined. In this inspiring collection of stories, Susan Freire-Korn shares how individual women have overcome adversity to emerge stronger and more courageous than ever before. Written by three African American women, three Caucasian women, and three Hispanic women, these tales share how kindness can transcend our basic human differences and bring unity to our lives regardless of culture or race. Each woman offers a unique and uplifting tale of how they suffered through sometimes years of despair and hardship, but never gave up on their desire for a better life. Whether they endured teenage pregnancy, alcoholism, and domestic abuse or loneliness, depression, and low self-esteem, these women prove that no matter the circumstances of chance or culture, the human spirit can triumph and emerge stronger than before. An excellent reference for those seeking to understand cultural differences as well as for those looking for encouragement in their own lives, Soul Sisters, Come on to My House beautifully shows how opening your heart and your mind will make the world a better place for all.

The Sole Sister, a group of True Crime Book Club members set out to select their second cold case which they hope to solve. When a high school girl disappears she is first expected to be a runaway, then identified as a victim of kidnapping. Using less-than-legal methods one of the Sole Sisters identifies a possible kidnapper, and then follows him to his 'hideout'.They quickly determine they have located a group organized to provide girls for a sex trafficking operation. The investigation quickly grew from local law enforcement in The Hamlets Florida (A drinking community with a golfing problem) to the local FBI, and then the National FBI and EUROPOL got involved. What was thought to be a small local operation is found to be a part of an international sex trafficking operation.

An early morning call alerts Kate Elder her husband in on his way from the golf course to the Emergency Room. Upon arrival at the hospital, Kate is made aware the real issue is her husband Tom has been shot by a sniper. Local Law Enforcement jumps onto solving the crime, then much to quickly they place the case in their cold case files. The redirection is intended to allow law enforcement to spend their time on Fenatyl distributions and areas where the media is focused. With elections upcoming the "Political Bosses" decide there are more politically correct crimes to investigate than a local sniper shooting. The Sole Sisters, a subgroup of Kate's True Crime Book Club managed to take on the now cold case involving her husband's sniper shooting. The Sole Sisters chose that name since they were all the only sister in their family, and therefore are used to getting their way. They pull enough strings to allow them to reopen the case and as a group of volunteers investigate the shooting, but on an extremely low profile. They quickly discovered the original investigation was not as thorough as it could have been. Details overlooked originally begin to boil to the surface. They develop a police artists drawing of the sniper along with a partial fingerprint, the sniper's rifle, and DNA evidence. While newly discovered DNA evidence begins to tie the shooter to at least another three murders there is no record of the DNA to tie it back to an individual. Further investigation calls attention to persons of interest in an IVF fertility clinic, sperm donors, and professional hitmen. The Sole Sisters using Artifical Intelligence, and just plain old-fashioned on-the-ground investigation techniques end up with a suspect held for trial. But that is not where it ends.

The second book in The Boots My Mother Gave Me series, Sole Sister picks up several years later, continuing the story of Harley LeBeau and her rebellious sister Katrina 'Kat' LeBeau. Relocating to Nashville to be closer to Harley and Miah, Kat aspires to launch her Sole Sister fashion line. A gutsy and impromptu plan suddenly lands her on the cover of The Ville Spill-the local celebrity gossip rag-alongside country music's latest heartthrob, giving Sole Sister the push it needs. But Kat quickly learns that not all press is good press. Years removed from an abusive childhood and teenage pregnancy, the past that Kat never talks about continues to seep into her life and relationships. Still struggling with the images of finding her father after his suicide, Kat forges ahead, vowing to avoid past mistakes. To focus on her career and responsibilities as a single mother, she swears off the disappointments of love. The first man she ever loved, her father, broke her heart. The first boy she ever fell in love with, her daughter's father, broke her heart. What Kat didn't plan on was Nashville SWAT Officer Connor Reese. She and Connor have more pulling them together than keeping them apart. Kat finds herself in familiar territory when her plan to steer clear of heartache is derailed after spending a night in his arms. Will facing her past help to secure her future? Will Connor offer her a second chance at life and love? Or will her heart break yet again? Staying true to its predecessor, Sole Sister explores the dynamics of strength in sisterhood, the ongoing conflict and unconditional love between mother and daughter, and the courage to become more than one's past.
