"I'm bored," thought Aaron Tiny as he sat behind a wall. He was staring through a tiny nail hole in the wall watching Peter Martin, the big boy in the next room playing video games. "I could do better than he's doing," Aaron sighed. At that moment, Aaron heard the boy's mother calling him. "Peter, are you ready to go to Aunt Martha's with me?" "Ready, or willing?" muttered Peter under his breath. When his mother appeared in the doorway, Peter finally turned off the video game and headed out. A moment later Aaron heard the front door close behind them. He waited several minutes, just to be sure they weren't coming back for something they had forgotten, then he quickly hurried down the hallway that had been built into the walls of the big people’s house. Now was his chance. Aaron had discovered a mouse hole that led into Peter’s bedroom only the week before. It had taken a little exploring, but finally he figured out a way to get down to the mouse hole and back up. He had needed a rope to climb on, but just that week the big family had thrown away an old lamp, and the cord was perfect for the task. Find out what happens when Aaron sneaks into Peter’s room to play a video game and finds himself in the middle of an earthquake! The Tinys are a family of very small people that live inside the walls of a big person’s apartment. In many ways Tinys are like littles, but they don’t have tails like littles do. There are four children in the Tiny family. Gabrielle (or Brie as she is better known) is the oldest. Then comes Aaron, the only boy. After Aaron are the twins, Danielle and Rachelle. They all live with their mother and father. Living nearby are their grandmother and their Aunti Karen, who they spend a lot of time with. The Tinys all live in the walls of an apartment that belongs to the Martin family. In the Martin Family there are the parents, June and Jerry, and their only child, Peter. They also have three cats! As you may know, cats love to chase things that are smaller than they are, and tinys are just the right size for a cat to chase. The cats will pounce on the tinys and bat them around. They may not mean to hurt the tinys, but they do. That’s why tinys don’t like cats. The Tinys work hard at making things work. They like to recycle things that the big people throw away. They also like parties, and good times, and spending time together. In many ways, Tinys are just like you and me, only smaller. Read about the adventures of the Tinies in this series. Ages 7 to 12. Humans are responsible for the extinction of animal species and other changes to our planet. Sometimes these changes are caused by the most insignificant-seeming decisions. When the residents of your small Florida town allowed some Burmese pythons to go free into the Everglades, they didnt consider that unlike in their natural habitats, here in the United States, these snakes have no natural predatorsand limited prey. Your safe suburban town is about to be surrounded by renegade snakes who have spent the last several years quietly eating all of the mammals they can find in the swamp. They had enough to eat for awhile. But now they are hungry. And you might be their next snack!

Burmese pythons are native to Southeast Asia, so when one showed up dead along the side of a Florida highway in 1979, scientists wondered where it came from. No one knew the snakes had launched a full-scale invasion. Pet pythons that escaped or were released by their owners started breeding in the wild, and these enormous predators began eating every animal in their path. Today a group of scientists at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida is tracking Burmese pythons to find ways to stop their spread. Page Plus links lead to video clips and photos of the scientists working in the field. Delve into the science of pythons and their role as invasive predators.

This new edition of Invasion Ecology provides a comprehensive and updated introduction to all aspects of biological invasion by non-native species. Highlighting important research findings associated with each stage of invasion, the book provides an overview of the invasion process from transportation patterns and causes of establishment success to ecological impacts, invader management, and post-invasion evolution. The authors have produced new chapters on predicting and preventing invasion, managing and eradicating invasive species, and invasion dynamics in a changing climate. Modern global trade and travel have led to unprecedented movement of non-native species by humans with unforeseen, interesting, and occasionally devastating consequences. Increasing recognition of the problems associated with invasion has led to a rapid growth in research into the dynamics of non-native species and their adverse effects on native biota and human economies. This book provides a synthesis of this fast growing field of research and is an essential text for undergraduate and graduate students in ecology and conservation management. Vertebrate invasive species are important ecologically, socially, and scientifically throughout much of the globe. However, the interdiction and options for management of invasive species are driven by localized regulation at the country or even state level and thus the management of species must be framed within that context. This book is focused around the management of invasive vertebrate species in the United States, although readers will find much of the material broadly applicable to invasive species in other regions. Vertebrate invasive species cause damage to agriculture, property, natural resources, and threaten human health and safety. However, most of these species occur in the United States resulting from human-mediated activities, often being released intentionally. For the first time, the wealth of scientific information about vertebrate invasive species in the United States is summarized and synthesized in a single volume to be easily accessible to ecologists and natural resource managers. With a focus on prominent terrestrial invasive species that have a history of policy and management and highlighting contemporary issues and management, this book consists of 18 chapters written by experts from across the United States. The first section of the book focuses on overarching policy and management topics associated with vertebrate invasive species; including biosecurity threats and risk assessment, policy and regulation, and the economics of their management. The second section provides in-depth reviews of noteworthy invasive mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. After finishing this book, the reader should understand the complexity of managing invasive species, the unique challenges that each new species may present, and the steps forward that may decrease the impact of these species on the environment, human health, and the economy.

INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES Invasive Alien Species: Observations and Issues from Around the World Volume 1: Issues and Invasions in Africa Invasive alien species are spreading into new ecosystems each year. The impacts caused by these invaders can be swift and devastating. The topic of invasive alien species is large, complex, and globally significant at various scales, exacerbated by the globalization of world economies and increased trade and commerce that has overcome natural barriers to species movement. Invasive alien species threaten global food supplies, water quality and availability, and energy production and delivery. With the added risks associated with global climate change, the global homogenization of plants, animals, and microbes is a major factor in the decline in ecosystem health and ecosystem services worldwide. To counter this trend, there is a critical need to unify governments, cultures, and programs to improve cross-boundary coordination to effectively address the wide range of invasive alien species threats to the environment, economies, and to plant and animal health; particularly human health. This 4-volume work is the first to compile a set of useful material for key topics, to provide a better understanding of the overall global threat of invasive alien species and the diverse array of problems faced around the world, and assemble material that includes potential replicable solutions to overcome these threats. The books also highlight the threat posed by invasive alien species in terms of a global ‘call to action’. Since invasive species know no boundaries, it is our hope that by compiling material from different scientific and social perspectives around the world, and sharing knowledge and examples of a diverse array of associated topics, we can advance global awareness and improve unified national responses to the threat posed by invasive alien species.
