In this marvelous anthology of 24 stories about women in the Bible, Rabbi Jill Hammer draws from the ancient tradition of Midrash -- creative interpretation that elaborates upon the sparse details of the biblical text -- and brings to life the inner world and experiences of these unforget-table characters. The stories reintroduce Lilith, Sarah, Leah, Miriam, and many other notable women of the Bible as the author weaves together the rabbinic legends and her own vivid imagination. Hammer's commentary includes a list of biblical texts and an explanation of how each story came to be written and why. Praised for its originality and expressiveness, this book gives biblical women the honor they deserve -- an honor due them as prophets, rulers, and teachers. Book jacket.

Fathers, sons, and mothers take center stage in the Bible’s grand narratives, Amy Kalmanofsky observes. Sisters and sisterhood receive less attention in scholarship but, she argues, play an important role in narratives, revealing anxieties related to desire, agency, and solidarity among women playing out (and playing against) their roles in a patrilineal society. Most often, she shows, sisters are destabilizing figures in narratives about family crisis, where property, patrimony, and the resilience of community boundaries are at risk. Kalmanofsky demonstrates that the particular role of sisters had important narrative effects, revealing previously underappreciated dynamics in Israelite society.

The Hebrew prophets of ancient Israel strove to convey God’s point of view to the people and the powers at a time when injustice, deceit, malfeasance, and crushing the poor and the oppressed was prominent—much like today! The prophets spoke courageously and emphatically about God’s profound and unrelenting concern and compassion for human beings. Much influenced by the theology of prophecy developed by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, this book discusses the nature, meaning, and relevance of ethical prophecy at a time when democracy—in the United States of America and elsewhere—is under vicious assault from the religious and secular right and authoritarian politicians who openly flirt with and support murderous dictators, sexism, homophobia, racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred of Muslims both in word and practice. An examination of the contributions of eight powerful personalities from the period of American slavery through the post-civil rights era—Angelina Grimké, Ida B. Wells, Abraham J. Heschel, James Baldwin, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Óscar Romero, and Alice Walker—offers a recipe for addressing this state of affairs.

"This is a biography of Katharine Smith Salisbury, the longest-surviving member of the Joseph Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith family. The book is based on a cache of letters, interviews, and recorded speeches. It records a life of challenges, including religious prejudice and ostracism. Three of Katharine's children died in infancy. Her husband was only intermittently available as a provider. The Salisburys were driven from Ohio and Missouri, and her husband died at forty-four. Through all these challenges Katharine remained loyal to her brother Joseph Smith Jr., vouching for his prophetic appointment. The challenges she endured solidified her commitment to take up her cross for the cause of her faith"--
