"A convenience sample of community members in the Seward neighborhood reports that safety, affordable housing, and traffic management are concerns shared by the members participating in the study. The Seward Neighborhood Community Survey, guided by a working group of board members and staff from each organization, is a joint project of the Seward Neighborhood Group (SNG) and Seward Redesign. The project is intended to inform both organizations about perceptions, needs, and opportunities in the Seward neighborhood. The gathering of this data is important as SNG conducts a final review of the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) Phase I and enters into planning for the second round of (NRP) funding, and as Seward Redesign develops a strategic plan to guide its community development activities for the next three to five years. The project was funded by the Twin Cities Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), which supports both organizations through its Minneapolis Fund for Neighborhood Development. Data collection for the project was based on two methods with two potentially overlapping samples. These two methods include; 1) intercept interviews of community members, and 2) self-administered response forms completed by community members. One hundred thirty community members were interviewed in September and October, 2000."--From executive summary (page 1).

"The Seward neighborhood in South Minneapolis has long been known for its liberal politics and community activism ... The essays collected here, written by Seward residents and often based on oral histories, tell the stories of the men and women who followed Dakota trails from Fort Snelling to the Falls of St. Anthony, attended the State Fair during the years it was held in Seward, worshipped at local churches of several faiths and denominations, worked in the local rail yards or at Minneapolis Moline, and swapped stories after work in the bars of the Hub of Hell. There are chapters devoted to art and music, parks and recreation, the first settlers, Mom and Pop stores, the changing architectural styles of the neighborhood, and the communitiy's efforts to preserve that heritage from government mandated urban renewal during the 1960s. The concluding chapter traces the arrival of East African immigrants to the neighborhood-- a movement that echoes and also advances the activist and community building energies that have brought life to the neighborhood from the beginning"--Back cover.

The concept of sustainability holds that the social, economic, and environmental factors within human communities must be viewed interactively and systematically. Sustainable development cannot be understood apart from a community, its ethos, and ways of life. Although broadly conceived, the pursuit of sustainable development is a local practice because every community has different needs and quality of life concerns. Within this framework, contributors representing the disciplines of anthropology, sociology, geography, economics, law, public policy, architecture, and urban studies explore sustainability in communities in the Pacific, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, and North America. Contributors: Janet E. Benson, Karla Caser, Snjezana Colic, Angela Ferreira, Johanna Gibson, Krista Harper, Paulo Lana, Barbara Yablon Maida, Carl A. Maida, Kenneth A. Meter, Dario Novellino, Deborah Pellow, Claude Raynaut, Thomas F. Thornton, Richard Westra, Magda Zanoni Carl A. Maida is a professor in the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at the University of California, Los Angeles. A medical anthropologist, he has conducted ethnographic fieldwork on health and the environment in metropolitan Los Angeles. Previous publications include Pathways Through Crisis: Urban Risk and Public Culture (Rowman & Littlefield, 2008), Children and Disasters (Routledge, 1999), and The Crisis of Competence: Transitional Stress and the Displaced Worker (Routledge,1990).
