The present volume in the New Series of Landolt-Börnstein provides critically evaluated data on phase diagrams, crystallographic and thermodynamic data of ternary alloy systems. Reliable phase diagrams provide materials scientists and engineers with basic information important for fundamental research, development and optimization of materials. The often conflicting literature data have been critically evaluated by Materials Science International Team, MSIT®, a team working together since many years, and with expertise in a broad range of methods, materials and applications. All evaluation reports published here have undergone a thorough review process in which the reviewers had access to all the original data. The data for each ternary system are provided in a standard format which includes text, tables and diagrams. The topics presented are literature data, binary systems, solid phases, pseudobinary systems, invariant equilibria, liquidus, solidus, and solvus surfaces, isothermal sections, temperature-composition sections, thermodynamics, materials properties and applications, and miscellanea. Finally, a detailed bibliography of all cited references is provided. In the present volume IV/11A4 selected light-metal ternary alloy systems are considered ranging from Al-Si-Ti to Ni-Si-Ti.

Wettability at the solid/liquid interface, its dynamics, tunability, the influence of operating parameters, surface and interfacial phenomena play an increasingly significant role in a wide variety of applications, for example, material processing, nanotechnology, oil recovery, oil spills, chemical leaching, water management, and disease transmission. Although a mature field, it is experiencing dramatic developments on several fronts with emerging applications in new fields. This book presents a collection of eight chapters on nanoscale wetting phenomena, oil extraction from reservoir rocks, the role of coatings, particle morphology, surface roughness and viscosity in metal processing, and practical applications of superhydrophobic behaviour in cell culturing, isolation, anti-icing, anti-reflective and anti-corrosion coatings in the transportation and optical devices fields.

Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis of Materials is a collection of papers that reflects modern trends in self-propagating, high-temperature synthesis (SHS), a process for synthesis of modern materials carried out in the mode of autowave solid-flame combustion. To date, SHS-produced materials have found their application in different branches of modern science and technology, mechanical engineering, ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, aerospace engineering, chemical industry, electrical engineering, and electronics. This book is useful not only for the SHS community, but also for researchers and engineers who are active in the following related fields of knowledge; theory and practice of combustion, materials science and technology, pure and applied chemistry, and metallurgy.

Brazing processes offer enhanced control, adaptability and cost-efficiency in the joining of materials. Unsurprisingly, this has lead to great interest and investment in the area. Drawing on important research in the field, Advances in brazing provides a clear guide to the principles, materials, methods and key applications of brazing. Part one introduces the fundamentals of brazing, including molten metal wetting processes, strength and margins of safety of brazed joints, and modeling of associated physical phenomena. Part two goes on to consider specific materials, such as super alloys, filler metals for high temperature brazing, diamonds and cubic boron nitride, and varied ceramics and intermetallics. The brazing of carbon-carbon (C/C) composites to metals is also explored before applications of brazing and brazed materials are discussed in part three. Brazing of cutting materials, use of coating techniques, and metal-nonmetal brazing for electrical, packaging and structural applications are reviewed, along with fluxless brazing, the use of glasses and glass ceramics for high temperature applications and nickel-based filler metals for components in contact with drinking water. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Advances in brazing is a technical guide for any professionals requiring an understanding of brazing processes, and offers a deeper understanding of the subject to researchers and engineers within the field of joining. Reviews the advances of brazing processes in joining materials Discusses the fundamentals of brazing and considers specific materials, including super alloys, filler metals, ceramics and intermetallics Brazing of cutting materials and structural applications are also discussed
