What is a Love Feast? How did the early church celebrate the Love Feast? How might Christians today celebrate the Love Feast? In Recovering the Love Feast, Paul Stutzman addresses these questions, offering a unique blend of liturgical history and practical theology. Part I outlines the history of the Love Feast, noting its prevalence in early church worship, its gradual decline, and its reemergence in the practices of several Pietist groups (e.g., the Moravians, Methodists, and Brethren). Particular focus is given to five elements of the celebration, that is: eucharistic preparation, feetwashing, the fellowship meal, the holy kiss, and the Eucharist proper. In Part II, Stutzman argues that the Love Feast is a valuable Christian practice and a celebration worth recovering in those traditions that may have forgotten the feast. Rather than prescribing a specific method for celebrating the Love Feast, Stutzman proposes that there are five key disciplines that today's Love Feasts should embody: submission, love, confession, reconciliation, and thanksgiving. This book encourages Christians from a range of traditions to experiment with reclaiming the Love Feast, with the hope that each celebration serves as an act of worship to God and an authentic expression of Christian discipleship.

The United Methodist Church is at a crossroads, and nothing is more important than reclaiming our sacramental distinctiveness in times of great divisiveness. This book takes a fresh look at Wesley’s core teachings on the Lord’s Supper, letting each unique feature of Wesley's communion theology become a lens to navigate troubled waters. The author explores the historical background of each characteristic, finds evidence in writings of John and Charles Wesley, and applies them to the struggles of present-day United Methodism. He concludes with signs of life emerging in divisive and uncertain times, as people come back to the table to move forward into the future.

How does a pastor help revitalize and reclaim one of the church's core practices? This project was an intentionally inter-disciplinary effort to help active pastors reclaim a core practice in its local setting and context. One approach, employed by this project, is to seek understanding into three key areas: the ministry context, the ministry practice and the minister. This project mostly focused on the first two: the ministry context and the ministry practice. In the process, the minister gained insight into why he approached the project the way he did (primarily through preaching and a preparation tool), and what he might be able to change, or add to, his approach in the future (relationship building). This project sought to reclaim one specific ministry practice, the Love Feast, in a specific ministry context, two small, small-town, traditional churches, the Nettle Creek and White Branch Churches of the Brethren in Hagerstown, Indiana. The Love Feast is a threefold communion practice consisting of feetwashing, fellowship meal and bread and cup communion. Reclaiming the practice would be defined as increased participation (quantitatively) and increased perceived value (qualitatively). This project proposed two plausible ways to increase the participation and perceived value of the practice in this context: sermons preached and a preparation tool prior to the Love Feast services (Chapter One). One of the first steps in reclaiming a core ministry practice is to understand the ministry context and what sociological, historical, theological, and biblical factors have formed the current practice in this context (Chapters Two through Five). The research in this project traces the practice of the Love Feast from the Brethren origins of the movement's founder, Alexander Mack, in the early 18th century Germany. It then proceeds to show how the Brethren experienced a time of change and transformation between 1850-1950 in America that affected each aspect of church life, including the Love Feast (Chapter Three). Other Brethren authors and leaders since Mack have attempted to reclaim the practice and provided theological insight into how and why it is practiced today (Chapter Four). This project employed a brief exegesis of six key Scriptures that have influenced the Brethren reconciliation view of the Love Feast and communion, I Corinthians 11, I Corinthians 10, John 13, John 6, Luke 22 and Acts 2 (Chapter Five). While other traditions have taken some different approaches to these Scriptures, these are the key Scriptures that inform a reconciliation focus, which the Brethren have used, to build the Love Feast practice. Change in small, small-town, traditional churches is often primarily a relational task (Chapter Six). Instead of primarily seeking change through ideas, programs and meetings, relationships developed over time are often more significant in producing change in this context. Together with the understanding the ministry context and the ministry practice, a third, and significant factor, is the minister, or the one seeking to lead the change effort. The minister must have self-awareness of what he/she enjoys, is gifted at, and needs to change as well. Preaching has always held and continues to hold a unique role an agent of change (Chapter Seven). Since the author of this project had the role of preaching regularly at both churches and enjoyed that role, the author built a plan connecting preaching to change. The effectiveness of a change effort is benefited by intentionally sought feedback to measure if the efforts are producing the intended results. This project utilized six surveys of the congregation throughout the study to get a broad sense (quantitative perspective) of the effect of this project. It also utilized five face-to-face interviews in order to develop a more qualitative perspective. This feedback provided insight into a key correlation between being raised Brethren and participation in and value of the Love Feast. Those who had not been raised Brethren were much less likely to value and participate in the Love Feast, than those who had been. The sermons and the preparation tool, along with inviting Christians from other churches to participate provided modest gains in the reported value and participation of the Love Feast (Chapter Eight).

An indispensable resource for exploring food and faith, this two-volume set offers information on food-related religious beliefs, customs, and practices from around the world. Why do Catholics eat fish on Fridays? Why are there retirement homes for aged cows in India? What culture holds ceremonies to welcome the first salmon? More than five billion people worldwide claim a religious identity that shapes the way they think about themselves, how they act, and what they eat. Food, Feasts, and Faith: An Encyclopedia of Food Culture in World Religions explores how the food we eat every day often serves purposes other than to keep us healthy and stay alive: we eat to express our faith and to adhere to ethnic or cultural traditions that are part of who we are. This book provides readers with an understanding of the rich world of food and faith. It contains more than 200 alphabetically arranged entries that describe the beliefs and customs of well-established major world religions and sects as well as those of smaller faith communities and new religious movements. The entries cover topics such as religious food rules, religious festivals and symbolic foods, and vegetarianism and veganism, as well as general themes such as rites of passage, social justice, hospitality, and compassion. Each entry on religion explains what the religious dietary laws and guidelines are and how these were interpreted and put into practice historically and in modern settings. The coverage also includes important festivals and feast days as well as significant religious figures and organizations. Additionally, some 160 sidebars provide examples and more detailed information as well as fun facts.

This bilingual edition of the Synopsis Purioris Theologiae (1625) provides English readers access to an influential textbook of Reformed Orthodoxy. Composed by four professors at the University of Leiden (Johannes Polyander, Andreas Rivetus, Antonius Walaeus, and Anthonius Thysius), it offers a presentation of Reformed theology as it was conceived in the first decades of the seventeenth century. From a decidedly Reformed perspective, the Christian doctrine is defined in contrast with alternative or diverging views, such as those of Roman Catholics, Arminians, and Socinians. The Synopsis responds to challenges coming from the immediate theological, social, and philosophical contexts. The disputations in this the third volume cover such topics as the sacraments, church discipline, the role of civil authorities, and eschatology. This volume also presents a thorough historical and theological introduction to the whole of the Synopsis.

In particular, there have been extensive additions with regards to the Christian Church in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, and Australasia. Significant updates have also been included on topics such as liturgy, Canon Law, recent international developments, non-Anglican missionary activity, and the increasingly important area of moral and pastoral theology, among many others. A story of food and love, injury and healing, Keeping the Feast is the triumphant memoir of one couple's nourishment and restoration in Italy after a period of tragedy, and the extraordinary sustaining powers of food, family, and friendship. Paula and John met in Italy, fell in love, and four years later, married in Rome. But less than a month after the wedding, tragedy struck. They had transferred from their Italian paradise to Warsaw and while reporting on an uprising in Romania, John was shot and nearly killed by sniper fire. Although he recovered from his physical wounds in less than a year, the process of healing had just begun. Unable to regain his equilibrium, he sank into a deep sadness that reverberated throughout their relationship. It was the abrupt end of what they'd known together, and the beginning of a new phase of life neither had planned for. All of a sudden, Paula was forced to reexamine her marriage, her husband, and herself. Paula began to reconsider all of her previous assumptions about healing. She discovered that sometimes patience can be a vice, anger a virtue. That sometimes it is vital to make demands of the sick, that they show signs of getting better. And she rediscovered the importance of the most fundamental of human rituals: the daily sharing of food around the family table. A universal story of hope and healing, Keeping the Feast is an account of one couple's triumph over tragedy and illness, and a celebration of the simple rituals of life, even during the worst life crises. Beautifully written and tremendously moving, Paula's story is a testament to the extraordinary sustaining powers of food and love, and to the stubborn belief that there is always an afterward, there is always hope.
