Youth, Identity, Power is a study of the origins and development of Chicano radicalism in America. Written by a leader of the Chicano Student Movement of the 1960s who also played a role in the creation of the wider Chicano Power Movement, this is the first fill-length work to appear on the subject. It fills an important gap in the history of political protest in the United States. The author places the Chicano movement in the wider context of the political development of Mexicans and their descendants in the US, tracing the emergence of Chicano student activists in the 1930s and their initial challenge to the dominant racial and class ideologies of the time. Munoz then documents the rise and fall of the Chicano Power Movement, situating the student protests of the sixties within the changing political scene of the time, and assessing the movement's contribution to the cultural development of the Chicano population as a whole. He concludes with an account of Chicano politics in the 1980s. Youth, Identity, Power was named an Outstanding Book on Human Rights in the United States by the Gustavus Myers Center in 1990.

Radicals in the Barrio uncovers a long and rich history of political radicalism within the Mexican and Chicano working class in the United States. Chacón clearly and sympathetically documents the ways that migratory workers carried with them radical political ideologies, new organizational models, and shared class experience, as they crossed the border into southwestern barrios during the first three decades of the twentieth-century. Justin Akers Chacón previous work includes No One is Illegal: Fighting Racism and State Violence on the U.S.-Mexico Border (with Mike Davis).

"Richard Alatorre spent more than four decades in social and political activism--almost 30 of them in politics as a California state legislator and a Los Angeles city councilmember. His political career started when he got involved in student government and he learned at an early age that politics is about power. He learned from his father growing up that Mexican Americans are often poorly served by the American political system at both the local and national level. Yet he came to believe in that system, but not blindly or naively. Power accrues to those who know how the system works and who work hard to make it respond to their needs. Essential to achieving power are a clear vision of where you are going, the commitment to work tirelessly for that vision, and the internal fortitude to sustain yourself during the struggle. This story recounts Alatorres' commitment to serving underserved minorities. It is a look behind the scenes, day-to-day nitty-gritty of cutting deals, leveraging influence, counting votes, and forging compromise, which is where the real work of politics, at least legislative politics, takes place. Through it all, he adhered to his goal of using politics to do something good for people. This is the story of his professional life in politics in California."--Provided by publisher.
