Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Painting: From 1200 1900 A. D Since lack of perspective often prevents students from reaping the benefit of their exertions, the author has endeavored to present here an arrangement which will assist them in obtaining a comprehensive view of the whole field of painting. The task of grouping and grading all the artists was one of such responsibility that the author submitted the proof sheets to various men, and arranged that each table should pass through the hands of at least one art critic, one executing artist, one art historian, and one director of an art school. He also availed himself of the kind services of specialists in preparing the pronouncing vocabulary of foreign names. In explanation of the general plan of the book the following points deserve mention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not illustrated. 1889 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter iii. tainting in italy, from the beginning of the renaissance to the present century. he reawakening of Art in Italy which followed the dark-I-ness of the Middle Ages, dates from about the beginning of the fifteenth century and is called the Renaissance. The Italians have a method of reckoning the centuries which differs from ours. Thus we call 1800 the first year of the nineteenth century, but they call it the first of the eighteenth; so the painters of what was to us the fifteenth century are called by Italians the " quattrocentistt'," or men of the fourteenth century, and while to us the term " cinquecento" means the style of the sixteenth century, to the Italians the same century, which begins with 1500, is the fifteenth century. I shall use our own method of reckoning in my writing; but this fact should be known to all who read or study art. The first painter of whom I shall now speak is known to us as fra angelico. His name was Guido, the son of Pietro, and he was born at Vicchio in the province of Mugello, in the year 1387. We know that his family was in such circumstances that the young Guido could have led a life of ease; but he early determined to become a preaching friar. Meantime, even as a boy, he showed his taste for art, and there are six years in his life, from the age of fourteen to twenty, of which no one can tell the story. However, from what followed it is plain that during this time he must somewhere have devoted himself to the study of painting and to preparation for his life

Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. The symposium—designed for art historians, conservators, conservation scientists, and museum curators worldwide—was organized by the Department of Art History at the University of Leiden and the Art History Department of the Central Research Laboratory for Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam. Twenty-five contributors representing museums and conservation institutions throughout the world provide recent research on historical painting techniques, including wall painting and polychrome sculpture. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas. Color plates and black-and-white photographs illustrate works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
