"The purpose of this case study was to describe how the implementation of data teams affects teachers' classroom instructional practices in one fourth grade classroom at five elementary schools in the same suburban school district serving approximately 5,000 total students. The design selected for this research study was a qualitative multiple case study. A fourth grade teacher was purposefully selected from each of the five elementary buildings in one school district. The five participants were selected because they all taught fourth grade, were data team leaders, and had received data team leader training. A qualitative cross-case synthesis technique was used to analyze the data collected from the five schools. This study described the affect the implementation the data team process had on classroom teacher's instructional practices in fourth grade."--Abstract.

The following study was prepared to find the overall opinion about the use of Data Teams, and if there is a difference in opinion between administrators and teachers regarding Data Teams. The Public School District has chosen to incorporate the use of Data Teams to better address student learning. It has become a focus throughout the district this year, as well as a building focus. The Data Team process is a time consuming process and requires a great deal of time and effort on the part of teachers and administrators. It is important to note that this was the first year that this school district chose to implement Data Teams. The overall opinion regarding Data Teams will be shown. Additionally, survey results will be analyzed to see if there is a difference in opinion between administrators and teachers with regards to the Data Teams. It was found that the overall opinion about Data Teams is positive. Additionally, it was found that there were significant differences between administrators and teachers opinion with regards to Data Teams. 100% of administrators surveyed agreed that teachers apply the Data Team process smoothly, but only 60% of teachers reported that teachers apply the Data Team process smoothly. 100% of administrators surveyed agreed that teachers analyze student work to set appropriate goals, while 87% of teachers agreed that teachers analyze student work to set appropriate goals. 100% of administrators reported that teachers establish goals directly related to school goals, while 80% of teachers reported that teachers establish goals directly related to school goals. 100% of administrators reported they have evidence of the impact and efficacy of Instructional Data Teams, and only 67% of teachers reported evidence of the impact and efficacy of Instructional Data Teams. Because of the differences it is recommended that the policy of using Data Teams should be monitored and reviewed.

Holcomb uses scenarios from the fictitious Mode Middle School (a composite of real examples) to describe functions of data teams and provide readers with context for using data to improve student achievement. Additionally, each chapter provides sections called "Elementary Exceptions" and "High School Highlights," which identify variations of the events and concepts of the chapter pertinent to those grade levels. Data Dynamics begins with a review of how the focus has shifted from voluntary data use to federal mandates, and outlines current needs and trends that should drive immediate shifts in purpose and action. It goes on to describe conditions that enhance the use of data, including structures and processes that engage staff and tap the leadership of data dynamos. Educational reform is not easy. As school leaders search for a format that leads to improvement on many fronts concurrently, data teams is one such promising practice. The data team design not only involves sensemaking of data as evidence of effective teaching and learning, but also builds a professional learning community, distributes leadership, enhances professional development, develops principals as instructional leaders and engages students in mastering standards. This study examines the implementation of data teams in a large urban district through surveys of 36 principals. ABSTRACT SHARED FOCUS/COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY: THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF EDUCATORS AS MEMBERS OF A DATA TEAM IN A CONNECTICUT PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL This study explores the experiences of five high school English Teachers in a Connecticut public school acting as an Instructional Data Team as prescribed by the Connecticut Accountability for Learning (CALI) model. Data Teams are teams of educators that participate in collaborative, structured, scheduled meetings, which focus on the effectiveness of teaching as determined by student achievement. Data Teams adhere to continuous improvement cycles, analyze trends, and determine strategies to facilitate analysis that results in action. Data Teams can occur at the state, district, school and instructional level. In order to explore the experiences of my participants, I used qualitative case study design to gather data through in-depth interviews, document review, and observations of the Data Team. Analysis of the data revealed that although each participant had a unique experience as a member of a Data Team, all shared many perspectives in common. Six themes that emerged throughout the interviews were: collaboration, shared leadership, organizational conditions, standards-based education, assessment, and self-efficacy. The study points to recommendations for districts, schools, and policy makers who are hoping to train, support, and retain teachers. The study offers suggestions for future research on Data Teams as one strategy for school and district improvement.
