Excerpt from Biographical Record of the Alumni of Amherst College, During Its First Half Century: 1821 1871 In the Preface to the History of Amherst College, which was published in 1873, it was announced that at my instance and the request of the Faculty Professors Crowell and Montague had commenced the collection of materials for a History of the Graduates of the College, which would be given to the public as soon as it could be prepared. After the lapse of ten years that promise is now ful filled, though not without some change of plan and of hands in the execution of the work, which will be explained in the Preface. Meanwhile Professor Montague has prepared and printed, with great labor and painstaking, a Record of the non-graduate Members of Amherst College from 1821 to 1871. These three works, the His tory of the College, the Record of its Alumni, and the Record of its non-graduates, together with the Exercises at the semi-centennial, and Student Life at Amherst, all clustering about the semi-genten nial, make up a pretty complete picture, or series of pictures, of Amherst College during the first half century of its existence.
