Nudibranchs of the Coral Triangle became the only guide to nudibranchs on the market with an up-to-date 2022 taxonomy after its major update (November 2022) This book is a field guide, an assistant for the identification of nudibranchs species in the region. It is designed for divers, underwater photographers. The book presents 1060+ species nudibranchs that can be found and photographed in depths and regions accessible to recreational diving. Photographs, showing color variations and age differences are included. A lot of species covered by this guide have never before appeared in field guides or popular books. Compact text blocks provide information about Common name, Latin name, family, geographic distribution, size, and the most distinctive features. An extensive photo index at the beginning of the book helps you to find the right group of nudibranchs, especially for readers who have not yet mastered their names. Nudibranchs or sea slugs occur throughout the world’s oceans and are present in many marine habitats. The greatest diversity of species is found in the Indo-Pacific tropics with a concentration of species within the Coral Triangle (CT), encompassing the waters of six Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Malaysia, Timor-Leste and Solomon Islands. This global epicenter of marine biodiversity covers only 1.6 percent of the planet’s oceanic area, but attracts an increasing number of divers and underwater photographers, including nudibranch lovers.

In 2015 three leading scientific experts on nudibranchs and sea slugs collaborated to produce a comprehensive guide for divers and scientists to the Indo-Pacific region. After only three years, Nudibranch and Sea Slug Identification Indo-Pacific has sold out and become outdated due to the discovery of new species and numerous changes to the taxonomy of these organisms. On 1 November 2018, a new 2nd Edition will be realeased -- updated and reorganised, including 185 new species. Among other features, the new edition includes additional photographs of species, an identification key, and an up-to-date classification. The Indo-Pacific represents the largest expanse of tropical ocean in the world, stretching from the Indian Ocean coast of southern Africa and the Red Sea to the central Pacific of the Hawaiian Islands, Easter Island and the Marquesas. This region supports the most diverse marine fauna of any place in the world for most groups of marine organisms. The nudibranchs and sea slugs are no exception to this rule; there are about 3,000 described species of these organisms in the world and at least 40% of these have been found exclusively in the Indo-Pacific tropics. This book illustrates 2,138 Indo-Pacific nudibranchs and sea slugs, including many undescribed species.

"Endlessly fascinating, unpretentiously educational, thoughtfully accessible and beautifully presented" - Alex Tattersall, award-winning underwater photographer and the founder of Underwater Visions. The Coral Triangle, straddling the confluence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, harbours the greatest biodiversity of marine life on the planet. It is home to a wondrous variety, including 75% of the world's coral species and around 2500 species of fish. The biological and environmental diversity is driven by the volcanically active and complex geology of the so called 'Ring of Fire'. Habitats range from underwater slopes of volcanic black sand to extensive coral reefs in atolls and vast calderas. While clearly vulnerable to increasing global threats such as climate change, pollution and overfishing, the Coral Triangle currently features some the richest coral reefs in the world. With stunning photography supported by an engaging and accessible text, this book highlights and celebrates this biodiversity along with the underlying message that it needs our care and protection before it is too late.

Meet the world's most fascinating sea creatures—see the lives and curiosities of colorful fish and coral reefs—this spectacular volume has more than 300 color photos and extraordinary text from a leading marine biologist and underwater photographer, and the international expert on seahorses. In this richly informative volume, brimming with new discoveries and more than three hundred colorful images of jaw-dropping fish and coral reefs, you'll swim in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans; you'll be dazzled in the Coral Triangle and amazed in Triton Bay. Up close you'll meet the Cenderawasih fairy wrasse, with its florescent yellow streak; the polka-dot longnose filefish; and the multicolored seadragon. There are scarlet-colored corals, baby-blue sponges, daffodil crinoids, and all sorts of mystifying creatures that change color at the drop of a hat. The whale shark is almost larger than life and the author's beloved pygmy seahorse, unless photographed, is almost too tiny to see. The wondrous creatures inside are charmers and tricksters and excel in the arts of seduction and deception, and you'll have the rare chance to see and delight in their antics. You'll also learn what they eat, how they play, and how they care for one another, live on one another, and mimic others when they're afraid. There is also compelling insight into the naming process, which sea creatures are facing extinction, and how we can help them before it's too late.

Although it is commonly assumed that most speciation occurs in allopatry, a growing body of research indicates that natural selection can lead to reproductive isolation and speciation in sympatry. A common mechanism for sympatric speciation is ecological speciation, where diversification is driven by differential selection across ecological niches. New genetic and genomic techniques facilitate the discovery of cryptic ecological divergence, and allow us to examine in detail the relative roles of natural selection and gene flow in speciation, particularly in marine systems, where it is difficult to identify mechanisms for allopatric speciation. This dissertation combines broad exploratory field sampling with population genetic and phylogenetic methods to tease apart the roles of geographic isolation and natural selection in driving speciation in the Coral Triangle. Using the coral-associated nudibranch genus Phestilla as a model, in chapter 1 we examine the effect of coral host and geography on population divergence in Phestilla lugubris and Phestilla minor. Phylogenetic analyses and analyses of molecular variance of mitochondrial COI sequences indicate very little population structure in Phestilla lugubris, but Phestilla minor has diverged across the Sunda Shelf and across two major clades of coral host. In chapter 2 we use population genomics to test whether natural selection plays a larger role in the divergence of sympatric host-separated populations than allopatric populations of Phestilla minor. Population genetic analyses of genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms show host-driven divergence is stronger than that across the Sunda Shelf, despite having occurred more recently. Genomic scans for selection reveal an important role for natural selection in both geographic and host-associated divergence. Finally, in chapter 3 we broadened our approach to examine the roles of geography and host in diversification of all scleractinian-associated nudibranchs. A phylogenetic tree of COI, 16S, and H3 sequences from scleractinian-associated nudibranchs collected across the Indo-Pacific Ocean reveals three times the number of purported species than previously thought, with evidence for host shifting and geographic divergence multiple times throughout evolutionary history. Combined, these three studies demonstrate that both coral host and geography contribute to diversification both within and between species of scleractinian coral-associated nudibranchs.
