Excerpt from Quarter Centennial Anniversary Souvenir of the Southern Illinois State Normal University, 1899 Perhaps, at no other time in the history of the school has there been a more urgent need for a complete record of all the early facts connected with the founding, early struggles and growth of this institution. In the lapse of a quarter of a century many of the original actors who have hitherto supplied the early historic facts have passed away, and in a few years all data from eye witnesses will be unattainable. For this reason much space has been given to the historic phase, and especially, that it shall be written by those whose lives are a part of what they write. Another object of the Committee is to answer the insinua tion: Can any good thing come out of Egypt? More than once has Southern Illinois by the genius of her sons and the excellence of her institutions refuted the charge, but there are still those living within our own common wealth who look upon Egypt as a land without railroads, destitute of an educational spirit, and withal a fertile field for missionary labor. To answer, once for all, the edu cational part of the criticism, candid facts pertaining to the In uence of the Southern Normal in Egypt, will effectually set this question at 'rest. Although few Americans work as farmers these days, agriculture on the whole remains economically importantâ€"playing a key role in such contemporary issues as consumer health and nutrition, worker safety and animal welfare, and environmental protection. This publication provides a comprehensive picture of the primary education system for the nation's agriculture industry: the land grant colleges of agriculture. Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities informs the public debate about the challenges that will shape the future of these colleges and serves as a foundation for a second volume, which will present recommendations for policy and institutional changes in the land grant system. This book reviews the legislative history of the land grant system from its establishment in 1862 to the 1994 act conferring land grant status on Native American colleges. It describes trends that have shaped agriculture and agricultural education over the decadesâ€"the shift of labor from farm to factory, reasons for and effects of increased productivity and specialization, the rise of the corporate farm, and more. The committee reviews the system's three-part missionâ€"education, research, and extension serviceâ€"and through this perspective documents the changing nature of funding and examines the unique structure of the U.S. agricultural research and education system. Demographic data on faculties, students, extension staff, commodity and funding clusters, and geographic specializations profile the system and identify similarities and differences among the colleges of agriculture, trends in funding, and a host of other issues. The tables in the appendix provide further itemization about general population distribution, student and educator demographics, types of degree programs, and funding allocations. Concise commentary and informative graphics augment the detailed statistical presentations. This book will be important to policymakers, administrators, educators, researchers, and students of agriculture.

The American State Normal School is the first comprehensive history of the state normal schools in the United States. Although nearly two-hundred state colleges and regional universities throughout the U.S. began as 'normal' schools, the institutions themselves have buried their history, and scholars have largely overlooked them. As these institutions later became state colleges and/or regional universities, they distanced themselves from the low status of elementary-literally erasing physical evidence of their normal-school past. In doing so, they buried the rich history of generations of students for whom attending normal school was an enriching, and sometimes life-changing experience. Focusing on these students, the first wave of 'non-traditional' students in higher education, The American State Normal School is a much-needed re-examination of the state normal school. This book was subject of an annual History of Education Society panel for best new books in the field.

"Originally commenced as a pastime, and to please a circle of friends alone, success, in any degree, can only be hoped for, because of my vantage ground as an intimate and close friend of Mr. Lincoln, and because, by reason of such intimacy, of the novelty of some of the facts and deductions, and not, in any sense, by reason, but in spite of, its literary style or, rather, the lack thereof."--Preface.
