Excerpt from New England's Rare, Threatened, and Endangered Plants One's concern for endangered and threatened species is a value judgment that each of us must independently seek and refine. It is often a personal emotion tempered by the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the natural world in which we live. Although some species inherently have more emotional appeal, it matters little among bird, mammal, fish, invertebrate or plant for there is a commonality in being endangered. Shopping malls, housing projects and highways do not discriminate among life forms. Plants are the foundation of human existence, and concerns voiced on behalf of those that are endangered and threatened have particular significance. Scientists caution that plants have the potential to produce new sources of food, chemicals, energy and medicine for the world's ever increasing population. The concern for endangered and threatened species, however, must be more than a scientific assessment of a species'. Utilitarian value or a moral expression on all creatures' basic right to exist. The Grey Whale, the Bald Eagle and the Robbins' Cinquefoil perhaps symbolize the ever elusive quality of life in our existence; but there is much more. Endangered and threatened species possess the unique ability to force us to ponder our relationship with the natural world we share and make us cognizant of the intricacy and fragility of that relationship. This quality could be their single, greatest value if we endeavor to cherish, to conserve, to understand. Excerpt from Report on Endangered and Threatened Plant Species of the United States: Presented to the Congress of the United States of America by the Secretary, Smithsonian Institution, 15 December 1974 All animals are dependent on plants for food and survival. Once a spe cies of plant is extinct, the potential contained in that germ or gene pool is lost forever. A diversity of plant species is required to supply human necas sities and to maintain an ecological stability in the biosphere. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (public Law 93-205, approved December 28, 1973) directed the Smithsonian Institution to prepare a list of endangered and threatened plant species, to review methods of adequately conserving these species, and to report the Institution's recommendations to the Congress. Excerpt from New England Trees in Winter The photographic illustrations are all originals, most of them by the other author. Although one of us is responsible for the text and for the selection of the material photographed and the other for the photographs, we have freely consulted and the bulletin is therefore to be considered a joint publication. The order of arrangement of the Species in the text and the scientific names follow themsage of the seventh edition of Gray's Manual and the latter are in accord with the rules laid down in the Vienna Congress. The figures and descriptions given are of trees for the most part growing wild in New England. A few rarer Species which occur in New England only very locally or in isolated instances have been omitted from illustration. In their places, however, some of the more frequently cultivated trees, have been included because of their value for forestry planting in New England or because of their familiarity in city ornamental plant ings. The varieties of cultivated forms are so numerous that it is obviously possible to take account of only the most common types. Their inclusion, it is believed, will add to the value of the publi cation especially for its use in cities. The keys can be absolutely relied upon only for the Species just mentioned from New England. New England, including as it does the meeting ground between the northern and southern floras, is extremely rich in the species of trees represented. The bulletin, therefore, especially in its descriptive text and illustrations Should prove of service outside of the geographically restricted region described.
