Excerpt from Mummer Mystic Plays: I. Cobwebs; II. Whats Gone of Menie? A Study in Vulgarity The ruddy old Kentish Hall, very ancient indeed, and a good deal the worse for wear, shone red in the sunshine, as did the red brick terraces beyond; as seen through an arch of ivied Cloister, with a great clump of evergreens to one side. The sunshine, somewhat low, streamed through the ivy arch, and lighted up mossed and antique Quadrangle, with a Fountain playing in the centre. The whole Quad was ringing just then, to the sound Ofa rich resonant voice, as clear-toned as a Silver bell. A girl sat in a rocking-chair, rocking to and fro, and Singing to a baby-child, and there was ever the refrain of softly-plashing waters. There was an old woman Went up in a basket, Ninety times as high as the moon. Where She was going, I couldn't help asking, For in her hands, she carried a broom.
