No one has ever called Benjamin Jerry Cohen “Lucky Jerry.” Yet when he looks in the mirror, he sees a very lucky person. In a fascinating and often amusing recounting of his life, Cohen describes how a first-generation offspring of penniless immigrants, a mischievous student and chubby teenager, eventually attained an Ivy League education and won several prestigious university appointments while writing sixteen books relating to his scholarly specialty, international political economy. As he leads us through his experiences, Cohen also details his global travels to lecture or conduct research in more than four dozen countries and his long plunge into the world of dog shows where he entered the ring with a succession of Briards, a variety of French sheep dog. Included is an entertaining ghost-written memoir by one of his dogs about the three years they shared together in Paris, France. Lucky Jerry is the memoir of a modestly successful academic, told with panache, verve, and even a touch of whimsy. “If I were the professor and Jerry Cohen my student, I would enthusiastically give him an A+. His memoir is personal, warm, welcoming, at times funny. Along the way he provides an easy-to-understand examination of Political Economy, the discipline for which he has been a shining light, pioneer, and thought leader. Wonderful reading.” – Victoria Riskin, writer-producer and author of Faye Wray and Robert Riskin: A Hollywood Memoir “For all his many friends who want to know the path Jerry took to become so informed and involved, so interested and interesting in so many areas and a leader in his field, all the while being a close and caring friend – this is the book where you’ll find the answers. If you’re not a friend of Jerry’s yet, read this book and I guarantee you will be.” – David W. Rintels, film writer and producer, author of the one-man play Clarence Darrow “Jerry Cohen is that rarest of academics: a prolific researcher and a gifted teacher who is also blessed with a golden pen. As my teacher and dissertation advisor at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in the 1980s, he was demanding yet kind, a wonderful mentor to me and thousands of other students who were lucky enough to pass through his classroom. In this vibrant memoir, we see the life of a superb political economist, a brilliant scholar, a noted gourmand and wine connoisseur. But the single word in my mind for Jerry Cohen is a simple yet proud title: teacher. He’s the best I’ve ever had. Reading this story of his life’s voyage is a joy at every level.” – James G. Stavridis, admiral US Navy, retired, and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, 2009-2013

George Copway (Kahgegagahbowh, 1818-69), an Ojibwe writer and lecturer, rose to prominence in American literary, political, and social circles during the mid-nineteenth century. His colorful, kaleidoscopic life took him from the tiny Ojibwe village of his youth to the halls of state legislatures throughout the eastern United States and eventually overseas. Copway converted to Methodism as a teenager and traveled throughout the Midwest as a missionary, becoming a forceful and energetic spokesperson for temperance and the rights and sovereignty of Indians, lecturing to large crowds in the United States and Europe, and founding a newspaper devoted to Native issues. One of the first Native American autobiographies, Life, Letters and Speeches chronicles Copway's unique and often difficult cultural journey, vividly portraying the freedom of his early childhood, the dramatic moment of his spiritual awakening to Methodism, the rewards and frustrations of missionary work, his desperate race home to warn of a pending Sioux attack, and the harrowing rescue of his son from drowning.

“Evanovich…with a dash of CSI.” – Publishers Weekly (review of Lucky Stiff) Some People Never Catch a Break For Lucky O’Toole it’s a break from murder. As the Chief Problem Solver for the Babylon, Las Vegas’s most over-the-top destination, Lucky is used to cracking heads and cracking jokes. Besides, it’s Christmas. But even Santa can’t give Lucky what she wishes for. LUCKY BREAK Holt Box, a beloved country singer on the comeback trail is killed in Lucky’s lover, Jean-Charles’s, kitchen. Mr. Box dies in Lucky’s father’s arms. Her former lover, Teddie, is accused of the murder. A heavy-hitter in the Macanese underworld is working over Lucky’s father. An old nemesis salivating for revenge gets out of jail on a technicality. Lucky’s mother is ramping up an ill-advised political campaign. And the holidays are racing to a crescendo. And then things get really messy… A light, funny, romantic mystery providing a Vegas escape appropriate for anyone looking for a good laugh. Get this can’t-put-it-down romp today! AN INTERVIEW WITH DEBORAH COONTS Why did you decide to write humor? I’m not sure I decided to add snark to the Lucky books, specifically to Lucky’s own voice, it just happened that way. When I was a kid, my mouth always got me into trouble. Finally, I’ve found a way to harness the sarcasm for the Forces of Good—or at least in a way not to anger my grandmother. And when Lucky started talking to me, she had a strong dose of sass in her. The Lucky O'Toole Vegas Adventure series is hard to categorize. Is that by design? When I set out to write Wanna Get Lucky?, I knew I wanted to write a romp through Las Vegas. I had the characters and the setting but no real understanding of narrative drive. So, I threw a young woman out of a tour helicopter into the middle of the Pirate Show and let the story unfold. A bit of murder to keep the plot moving, some wisecracking and Vegas mischief to make you laugh, and some romance to keep it interesting. A bit of a mash up, but it works. PRAISE FOR THE LUCKY O’TOOLE VEGAS ADVENTURE SERIES “Lucky’s story is funny, fast-paced, exuberant and brilliantly realized.” - Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author “Get ready to win big--with a novel that will keep you glued to the pages all the way to the end.” - Brenda Novak, New York Times & USA Today bestselling author "More fun than a winning streak in Vegas. Lucky O’Toole is a character with brains, beauty, and a wry sense of humor. Readers will want to meet her again—and soon." - Diane Mott Davidson, New York Times bestselling author "Deborah Coonts...entrusts the sleuthing to a brainy beauty who sees the lighter side of human folly." - New York Times Book Review "Las Vegas is the perfect setting for this witty tale of misdirection and larger-than-life characters. Fans of J. A. Konrath's Jack Daniels series will love this." - Library Journal, starred review "A whirlwind of a kooky crime novel, and readers will enjoy every minute of it. Coonts provides the perfect solution for readers waiting for the next Stephanie Plum book." - Booklist

Soon, Peter is farming around the clock, barely one step ahead of failure as Mae struggles to find her place in Peter’s life and in the community. Golf fiction’s finest hustler—The Green's Eddie Caminetti—returns in a laugh-out-loud novel featuring a foursome of upwardly mobile golf fanatics who get their just rewards. Tired of hustling for something as ordinary as money, Eddie Caminetti sets his sights slightly higher than other men's pockets: he goes after their souls. He now presides over Swithen Bairn, an exquisite secret golf course that’s a kind of twisted Fantasy Island where the arrogant and pompous find their cherished dreams suddenly transformed into their worst nightmares. When four enviably successful business/golf junkies are lured to Swithen Bairn by an irresistible offer— "the most memorable golf vacation you ever had or you don't pay" —the old adage that you can learn more about people during one round of golf than you can by living next door to them for six months comes hilariously and powerfully true. Mixing equal parts of suspense, hilarity, and raw human drama, Troon McAllister deftly shows readers what can happen when money, friendship, ambition, and greed converge explosively in a single round of golf.

When walking the French Quarter and watching a Lucky Dog salesman set up that colorful cart and call out to entice customers, don't you wonder how such a business works? As a knowing review in Rolling Stone stated, "People have always loved the cart and harbored a mysterious need to ride it. Revelers have been known to climb on top of the rolling wienies, screaming 'Yippee kaya!' as vendors stoically push them back to the barn at 4 a.m." Since 1947 the red and yellow carts have trumpeted good fortune and sustenance. Jerry E. Strahan recounts the wild adventures of the Bourbon Street wienie salesmen but also takes readers well beyond New Orleans. In fact, he takes them halfway around the world, where this unique pushcart business maneuvered its way through the bureaucratic red tape of a communist country to become a licensed corporation in the People's Republic of China. In China, two points quickly became apparent to Strahan. First, 99 percent of the Chinese population had no idea what a Lucky Dog cart represented. One elderly passerby declared it to be a missile. Second, the success or failure of any joint venture in the Asian nation is directly proportional to the political clout of that company's local partner. Lucky Dogs also recounts how the business and its vendors survived Hurricane Katrina. Miraculously, it reopened only six months after the storm in a city where more than 80 percent of the landmass had been flooded and where less than 40 percent of the population had returned. To reestablish itself in what many described as Third World conditions, the company had to transform its operation. This work mixes business history, autobiography, survival story, and an insider's look at the bizarre lives of some of Bourbon Street's most quirky characters--the dauntless Lucky Dog vendors. Both humorous and tragic, though it may read like fiction, it is, for better or worse, all fact.
