A gripping account of ordinary men with extraordinary courage and heroism who had one last chance to make good—and one helluva war zone to do it in. The new commander of the Company E, 52d Infantry LRRPs, Capt. George Paccerelli, was tough, but the men’s new AO was brutal. It was bad enough that the provinces of Binh Long, Phuoc Long, and Tay Ninh bordered enemy-friendly Cambodia, but their vast stretches of double- and triple-canopy jungle were also home to four crack enemy divisions, including the Viet Cong’s notorious 95C Regiment. Only the long-range patrols could deliver the critical strategic intelligence that the 1st Cav so desperately needed. Outmanned, outgunned, far from safety, these LRRPs stalked the enemy to his lair, staging bold prisoner snatches and tracking down hidden jungle bases. Hiding in ambush, surrounded by NVA, these teams either pulled off spectacular escape-and-evasion maneuvers in running firefights—or died trying.

Vietnam was a different kind of war, calling for a different kind of soldier. The LRRPs--Long Range Reconnaissance Patrols--were that new breed of fighting man. They operated in six-man teams deep within enemy territory, and were the eyes and ears of the units they served. This is their story--of perseverence under extreme hardship and uncommon bravery--and how they carried out the war's most hazardous missions.

Ranger the very word conjures up visions of small, highly trained units executing lightning-fast raids on an unexpecting enemy. It is also synonymous with high esprit de corps and excellence at arms. The US Army Rangers provide units of well-disciplined soldiers who possess the knowledge and courage to operate on their own, deep behind enemy lines. Gordon L. Rottman explores the history of these unique troops, starting with the original 'Rogers' Rangers' company of 1756, whose daring operations and deep penetrations of enemy-held country laid down the pattern for all subsequent Ranger units to follow.

Many books have been written about the Vietnam War. Most of them are just overviews of events and often focus on the political aspect of the conflict. Rarely is an individual under the rank of general mentioned, except for a paragraph or two about individuals who earned the Medal of Honor. Some books have been written by individuals who actually saw combat. They often name people who engaged the enemy. These are people whose boots were not spit shined and uniform did not have starched creases. This book contains stories by, and about, the men who served in one company, the 1st Cavalry Division’s LRRP/Rangers Company in the Vietnam War.

The Ranger Unit Operations Field Manual (FM 7-85) covers the operations of US Army Ranger units. In the preface, it states: "This publication contains doctrinal guidelines for the employment and training of ranger units. The intended audience is intermediate and higher level commanders, staffs of those headquarters, and newly assigned officers and NCOs of the ranger regiment. It is to be used with all other published US doctrine concerning NBC operations and the climatic or geographic influences on combat. The fundamentals apply to the employment of ranger units on worldwide operations and across the spectrum of conflict from low to high intensity warfare. This includes all aspects of the integrated battlefield: nuclear, biological, and chemical. It is not intended to apply to the employment of long-range reconnaissance patrol (LRRP) companies, even though such units carry the designation "ranger." These LRRP companies, as well as the long-range surveillance company (LRSC) (corps level) and the long-range surveillance detachment (LRSD) (division level), are organized, trained, and equipped for long-range reconnaissance in enemy territory. The scope of this publication addresses the mission, organization, equipment, capabilities, limitations, planning, training, operations, and logistical support of ranger units. It describes how the ranger regiment and its subordinate battalions train, receive taskings, plan missions, task-organize, deploy, and integrate supporting elements to perform the mission. Once in combat, the ranger regiment maneuvers to accomplish the mission in the manner of other light infantry units. Ranger units make full use of published light infantry doctrinal guidance." Some highlights of the contents: "The ranger regiment is a major component of the US Army's special operations forces. It is a unique light infantry unit tasked to conduct special military operations in support of national policies and objectives. These operations require highly trained, well-disciplined units capable of employment in any environment, either alone or in concert with other military forces. Within this publication, the term ranger force describes any size force consisting mainly of members of the ranger regiment and led by a member of the ranger regiment's chain of command. A ranger force may be a TOE unit or it may be a specially organized task force for a specific mission. The mission of the ranger regiment is to plan and conduct special military operations. These operations are conducted by specially trained, equipped, and organized forces against strategic or tactical targets in pursuit of national military, political, economic, or psychological objectives. They may support conventional military operations or they may be performed independently when conventional forces cannot be used." This manual is produced by Headquarters, US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC).

Lurps is the revised edition of the memoir of a juvenile delinquent who drops out of ninth grade to chase his dream of military service. After volunteering for Vietnam, he joins the elite U.S. Army LRRP/Rangers—small, heavily armed long-range reconnaissance teams that patrol deep in enemy-held territory. It is 1968, and the Lurps find themselves in some of the war's hairiest campaigns and battles, including Tet, Khe Sanh, and A Shau. Readers witness all the horrors, humor, adrenaline, and unexpected beauty through the eyes of a green young warrior. Gone are the heroic clichZs and bravado as compelling narrative and realistic dialogue sweep the reader along with a powerful sense that this is actually happening. This poignant coming-of-age story explores the social background that shaped the protagonist's thinking, his uncertain quest for redemption through increased responsibility, the brotherhood of comrades in arms, women and sexual awakening, and the baffling randomness of who lives and who dies.
