Air-flow characteristics behind wings and wing-body combinations are described and are related to the downwash at specific tail locations for unseparated and separated flow conditions. The effects of various parameters and control devices on the air-flow characteristics and tail contribution are analyzed and demonstrated. An attempt has been made to summarize certain data in a form useful for design. The experimental data herein were obtained mostly at Reynolds numbers greater than 4 x 105 and at Mach numbers less than 0.25.

An investigation was made by the NACA wing-flow method to determine the longitudinal stability and control characteristics at transonic speeds of a semispan airplane model having a wing of conventional plan form and a horizontal tail swept back 45 degrees. The wing and tail had NACA 65-series airfoil sections with thicknesses of 10 and 8 percent chord, respectively. The model was mounted in such a way as to permit it to assume a position of zero pitching moment about a center of gravity at 27 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord. Measurements were made of lift and angle of attack for trim for several stabilizer and elevator settings.

An exploratory investigation has been made of the effectiveness of outboard horizontal tails in reducing the static longitudinal stability changes with lift coefficient associated with many sweptback wings. The horizontal-tail surfaces were mounted on booms extending rearward from approximately the mid-semispan of the wing. The objective was to place the horizontal tail in a region where favorable downwash changes occur concomitant with the adverse lift changes on the sweptback wing which cause losses in static longitudinal stability.
