Recently, multiple-source feedlots in the Canadian prairie region have experienced many cases of antibiotic-resistant pneumonia, sometimes in association with fibrinous polyarthritis. This report describes an investigation of 187 cases of cattle with a history suggestive of that syndrome, using histopathology, microbiology, and immunohistochemistry to determine the frequency of occurrence of Mycoplasma bovis, bovine virus diarrhoea virus, and Hameophilus somnus in animal tissues. The findings suggest an association between two of the agents investigated in the pathogenesis of this syndrome.

This report describes & presents results of a study to determine the occurrence of bacterial pathogens in feeder cattle dying from myocarditis and to determine whether an association exists between these death losses and infection with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). In the study, tissues from heart & lungs of 92 calves dying from myocarditis in Alberta feedlots were immunohistochemically stained for antigens of Hemophilus somnus, Mycoplasma bovis, Mannheimia hemolytica, and BVDV. Tissues from 44 calves dying from non-infectious causes and 35 calves dying from pneumonia were tested as controls. The results indicate the principal pathogen involved in myocarditis and also find differences in the presence of BVDV between calves dying of myocarditis and calves dying of non-infectious causes.

For almost 60 years, continual research on the subject of Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) has raised as many questions as that research has answered. This common disease continues to cause sickness, death, abortion and fetal anomalies despite the millions of vaccination doses used each year to prevent its spread. Written by international experts on the subject of the BVD virus, BVDV: Diagnosis, Management and Control includes the latest information on BVD and outlines methods of diagnosis, management and control. Researchers, academics, and large animal practitioners will find this book an invaluable and irreplaceable resource for understanding and controlling outbreaks of BVD.
