This volume concentrates on the controversy within the scientific community over how to explain, understand and describe the photophysics/photochemistry of this class of materials. This controvery is of such a fundamental nature that the solution of the problem might be in a unification of the semiconductor and metal physics with the molecular quantum chemistry. Thus, a wide-ranging and comprehensive discussion of this very crucial issue has not been written down yet. This volume brings together the most prominent scientists specializing in this controversial topic. Each contributor addresses the opponents' arguments. After short introductory chapters, the contributors discuss their own speciality area and compare the results with both models and explain their position on why one of the models is more appropriate. Special emphasis is given to comparative discussions with other conjugated molecular systems as well as inorganic semiconductors.

While single particle spectroscopy (SPS) reveals a broad distribution of optoelectronic and photophysical properties, time-correlated single photon counting (TC-SPC) spectroscopy displays multiple fluorescence lifetime components for each nanoparticle composition, resulting from changing polymer chain morphologies and polymer-polymer aggregation. In addition, difunctional doped nanoparticles were fabricated by doping the monofunctional doped nanoparticles with PC60BM ((6,6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester) to investigate competition between intermolecular energy transfer and interfacial charge transfer. Specifically, the difunctional SPS data illustrated enhanced and reduced energy transfer mechanisms that are dependent on the material composition of MEH-PPV and PC60BM. These data are indicative of changes in inter- and intrachain interactions of BPPV and MEH-PPV and their respective nanoscale morphologies. Together, these fundamental studies provide a thorough understanding of monofunctional and difunctional doped nanoparticle photophysics, necessary for understanding the morphological, optoelectronic and photophysical processes that can limit the efficiency of OPVs and provide insight for strategies aimed at improving device efficiencies.

In 1980 the New York Academy of Sciences sponsored a three-day conference on luminescence in biological and synthetic macromolecules. After that meeting, Professor Frans DeSchryver and I began to discuss the possibility of organizing a different kind of meeting, with time for both informal and in-depth discussions, to examine certain aspects of the application of fluorescence and phosphorescence spectroscopy to polymers. Our ideas developed through discussions with many others, particularly Professor Lucien Monnerie. By 1983, when we submitted our proposal to NATO for an Advanced Study Institute, the area had grown enormous ly. It is interesting in retrospect to look back on the points which emerged from these discussions as the basis around which the scientific program would be organized and the speakers chosen. We decided early on to focus on applications of these methods to provide information about polymer molecules and polymer systems: The topics would all relate to the conformation and dynamics of macromolecules, or to the morphology of polymer-containing systems. Another important decision was to expand the scope of the ASI to include certain photochemical techniques, parti cular ly laser flash pho to lys is. These appl icat ions were at the time quite new, but full of promise as important sources of information about polymers.

Nanoparticles prepared by the reprecipitation of conjugated polymers are an exciting development in the field of biological imaging and fluorescence sensing. The colloidal stability of these hydrophobic polymers in aqueous suspension was found to originate from the surface charge density of ~15 mC/m2, which is in part attributed to negatively charged functional groups produced by polymer oxidation. The suitability of these nanoparticles in traditional conjugated polymer applications, such as polymer photovoltaics, was also investigated using femtosecond fluorescence upconversion and transient absorption spectroscopies. Polarisation resolved studies of energy transfer in highly compact nanoparticles and extended polymer conformations showed the nanoparticles exclusively undergo intermolecular energy transfer. These observations were supported by energy transfer simulations on polymer structures obtained from coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Next, the recombination of polarons in composite rr-P3HT/PCBM nanoparticles, dominated by geminate recombination below 10 wt% PCBM, was demonstrated using a one dimensional diffusion model. This model also yielded the P3HT domain size of ~5 nm, which confirms these nanoparticles can serve as a model system for probing charge generation and recombination processes in device-like environments. Finally, the power dependent exciton decay in highly ordered nanowires yielded an exciton diffusion length of 11 ± 3 nm, which is toward the upper limit of diffusion lengths reported for annealed P3HT films. This data indicates the gentle solution based crystallisation of nanowires is a promising route for enhancing the performance of bulk heterojunction devices.
