A rigorous historical and philosophical examination of the controversial spiritual Masters who guided Madame H.P. Blavatsky in opening the world to Eastern and esoteric spirituality in the late nineteenth century. In the late nineteenth century, Russian noblewoman and occult philosopher Madame H.P. Blavatsky enthralled the world with revelations of an ancient “secret doctrine” behind the major faiths and a cosmic theology that united the insights of religion and science. Blavatsky said she was operating under the guidance of hidden Masters of wisdom, or mahatmas, who led her to reveal forgotten wisdom to modern people. The mythos of Blavatsky’s Masters left a deep mark on Western culture and spawned more than a century of debate: Were the Masters real? What did they teach? Are they reachable today? Now, independent scholar of religion Edward Abdill provides an authoritative, historically reliable, and delightfully readable study of the background and ideas of the Masters – in particular highlighting their message and its enduring relevance.

"The great lights who have come out of all the world’s spiritual traditions and graduated from earth’s schoolroom have become widely known as masters. They demonstrate that in the world of Spirit, there is no division of race, religion or philosophy—there is simply oneness, ineffable sweetness and love. What is not so widely known is that these great masters have retreats—temples and cities of light in the heaven world—where we can go in spiritual meditation and while our bodies sleep at night. In this comprehensive work, Mark and Elizabeth Prophet talk about these great masters, the stories of their lives and their magnificent spiritual retreats."

This is the story of a young man who was contacted by discarnate spiritual beings who spoke to him through the medium of an ex-monk, some 36 years his senior. It concerns the spiritual training of the younger man given by these Masters, for that is what they were, and although the contact lasted for 21 years, from 1979-1999, the greater part of the book has to do with the first year when the process was at its most intense. Although originally intended for just one individual the training imparted is actually suitable for any spiritual seeker at any level, and there is discussion of many different aspects of the spiritual path as well as elucidation of occasionally controversial points such as the nature of the ego, the problem of evil, the place of sex in the spiritual life, the relevance of spiritual experiences and the function of teachers, all in a form that combines simplicity with depth.

During his one year at the University of Minnesota at age seventeen, his talent for writing composition was discovered and encouraged. He married a classmate from across the Canadian border, Lois Anderson. They parented four sons and two daughters. His marriage ended on August 6, 1995 when Lois went home to meet her Maker, her beloved Master. In 1999 he retired, met and married Alice Hedin and moved to Sioux Falls, SD to become a member of Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church. Most of these devotions were created from is seventy three years of eastern Montana life experiences, coupled with spiritual truths, principles, promises and testimonies of faith-builders he enjoyed in overcoming many of life's trials as a man of agriculture, a parent, and friend to many, and a devout, truly born-again man of God, hungry for God's Word. He is looking forward to a blessed eternity in Heaven with Jesus. Friend Stan Pickard for helping get started. Typists and editors: Daughter Ingrid Lardson, Grand-daughter Nichole Larson, friend Heather Ellyson, friends Bill and Shirley Scott for various chores along the way, and my faithful mate Alice for some good ideas and daily encouragement, and showing special interest all the way.
