When the author received messages after returning to the church after so many years of being away, she first thought they would go away. As they continued, and more messages, miracles, visions, and dreams occurred, she decided to write them all down in a notebook. Three notebooks later she realized that these things needed to be shared. These were stories for people who needed to SEE to BELIEVE. These are things that would help convince the world that there really is a God and he really loves us and wants us to repent and follow his ways.

Any partial health care reform is bound to fail. This is true in the case of the current “reform” as it was for the all the previous half-hearted efforts. Dr. Fouad Michael, a hugely successful physician who retired at the peak of his career to work for health care reform, outlines clearly and concisely how our dysfunctional health care system operates and how the soon-to-be-adopted system will perpetuate the same environment that gave us less than adequate care and unaffordable cost in a language the average reader can understand. Dr. Michael brings a unique perspective to this subject with his bicultural knowledge, having worked in two different types of health care systems, the Egyptian and the American. Back in Egypt, he experienced the socialist revolution of the sixties and studied and practiced medicine in a national health care system with all its flaws and ambitions. In America, he saw how a free market model and a for-profit delivery of health care have adversely affected the quality of our health care and our cost. Dr. Michael, in a simple and easy-to-read language, uses countless examples from his patients’ perspective that the reader can identify with to make the case for universal health coverage through a single paper system modeled on the five Canadian principles. He refutes the critics of the single payer system who are in the habit of frightening the American public from the assumed evils of our government. He makes the point that the government in our democratic system is only a vehicle to enforce our will. It is in fact the only entity we have to deal with in the single payer system instead of the wasteful and profiteering army of insurance companies. A single payer system is not socialism. It is not owned or run by the government; it is actually public financing for private practice. Dr. Michael sees in an informed public our best hope for understanding and effecting the needed change. For this end, he offers the lay reader an accessible and intelligent outline of the problems we face and a clearly defined and workable solution.

Gut health is the state of balance and well-being in the digestive system, particularly concerning the diverse community of microorganisms residing in the gut. This community, known as the gut microbiota, is vital for functions such as digestion and nutrient absorption. Probiotics, beneficial bacteria found in certain foods or supplements, play a key role in maintaining this balance. Prebiotics, non-digestible fibers in foods like garlic and bananas, act as nourishment for these beneficial bacteria. Fermented foods, such as yogurt and sauerkraut, contribute to gut health by introducing more beneficial bacteria through the fermentation process. The gut-brain axis connects the gut and the brain, suggesting a link between gut health and mental well-being. Research has associated imbalances in the gut microbiota with conditions like anxiety and depression. Diet plays a crucial role in influencing gut health, with a fiber-rich diet, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, promoting a healthy gut environment. Antibiotics, while essential for treating infections, can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, highlighting the importance of using them judiciously and considering probiotics afterward. Lifestyle factors like stress, sleep, and physical activity also impact gut health, emphasizing the interconnectedness of overall well-being with the digestive system. Consulting with a healthcare professional for personalized advice is recommended, as individual responses to various factors affecting gut health can vary.

Why the microbiome--our rich inner ecosystem of microorganisms--may hold the keys to human health. We are at the dawn of a new scientific revolution. Our understanding of how to treat and prevent diseases has been transformed by knowledge of the microbiome--the rich ecosystem of microorganisms that is in and on every human. These microbial hitchhikers may hold the keys to human health. In Gut Feelings, Alessio Fasano and Susie Flaherty show why we must go beyond the older, myopic view of microorganisms as our enemies to a broader understanding of the microbiome as a parallel civilization that we need to understand, respect, and engage with for the benefit of our own health.
