Far Southwest Virginia's High Knob Region, centered around 4,200-foot High Knob in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest's Clinch Ranger District, has long flown under the radar as one of central Appalachia's most underrated hiking destinations. Hikers looking to travel the area's trails, which lead to backcountry swimming holes, waterfalls, sweeping vistas, and old-growth forests, have mostly relied on online and word-of-mouth information for trip planning in the past. This trail guide, authored by local resident and biologist Wally Smith, formalizes information on local trails by profiling more than 25 hiking options throughout the High Knob Region, from shorter dayhikes suitable for beginners to true backcountry trails, some of which can be pieced together for overnight excursions. Each hike writeup includes detailed turn-by-turn directions and info on terrain and scenic features encountered on the trail, as well as driving directions to each trailhead, regional maps showing the location of each hike, and info on recommended maps and other resources for each profiled trail.
