Excerpt from Paris in America In a recent lecture, after commenting on the intense sympa thy which existed twenty or thirty years ago between Ameri cans and Frenchmen, when all seemed inspired with the friend ship of Lafayette and Washington, 111. Laboulaye asked: Why is it that this friendship has cooled? Why is it that the name of American is not so dear to us as it was in those days? It is due to slavery. We had always hoped that something would be done to put an end to an institution which was regarded by the founders of the Constitution as fraught with peril to the country; but, instead of this, the partisans of slavery having oh tained the ascendant, have continually been engaged in eiforts to perpetuate it and extend its limits so that we have ceased to feel the same interest in Americans. He concluded the same lecture with the words: America is the future of civilization America is the future of liberty. When her territory shall be come as populous as that of France, freemen will occupy it, with a system of. Government which will, with irre sistible force, draw all the world to folpow the example. It is for this that I am so interested in American progress; it is for this that I wish to direct your attention toward it. You. Excerpt from The American in Paris, Vol. 1 of 2 You have no sooner a guinea in London than you have none. In addition to the ways and means I pointed out in my last, gather together the letters I wrote you from Paris, and offer them to the booksellers. There are enough, if you have preserved them, for a volume. Those from London reserve until time has made the necessary additions for volume the second. I had partly the intention, in writing these letters, to dress them up one day into some kind of shape for the Public. I am not certain they are fit to be seen in their present dishabille - but leave that to the purchaser. A pretty woman slip-shod is a pretty woman still, and she is not so much improved as you think by her court dress. Tell the Public I do not mean them for great things: I am no critic, no politician, no political economist; but only, as Shakspeare would say, "a snapper up of inconsiderate trifles." - Under this title I have the honor to be, with the most perfect consideration, the Public's very obedient, humble servant. Excerpt from The American in Paris, During the Summer Picture of Parisian Life, in the Court, the Salons, and the Family Circle: Its Sports, Amusements, and Jules The English translator, in presenting another volume of the American in Paris to the public, has but a slight task imposed, in writing a preface. That of the French translator will fully explain the circumstances, which have enabled the publishers to avail themselves of the hint given by two or three reviews last year, that there were objects of interest, in and near the French capital, necessarily left undescribed, which would amply suffice to fill another volume. Excerpt from One Hundred Famous Americans To present a series of brief and interesting sketches of some of the greatest men and women of America - to group them by the callings in which their most important work has been done, to describe the events of their lives; to tell what they have been to their companions, to their professions, and to the great interests of their nation and the world at large - setting forth from different standpoints their influence upon their own times and the future. The endeavor has been to tell the stories of these great lives fairly and truthfully, omitting for the most part all anecdotes and purely personal matters, while making clear the distinguishing traits of each individual, not only as an individual, but also as a successful follower of his or her vocation. In this way some idea has also been given, it is hoped, of the most notable achievements in the history of the various professions here represented. It is not claimed that this selection forms a perfect list of our greatest men and women: many names having been omitted that rank with those given; but even in the wide difference of Opinion existing upon the merits of fame, it is believed that the characters herein described will be found to be a fair representation of those who have had the strongest influence upon our history. The compiler has been much aided in mak ing the selection by the advice - most generously bestowed - of several authors.
