Verne's first cautionary tale about the dangers of science — first modern and corrected English translation. When two European scientists unexpectedly inherit an Indian rajah's fortune, each builds an experimental city of his dreams in the wilds of the American Northwest. France-Ville is a harmonious urban community devoted to health and hygiene, the specialty of its French founder, Dr. François Sarrasin. Stahlstadt, or City of Steel, is a fortress-like factory town devoted to the manufacture of high-tech weapons of war. Its German creator, the fanatically pro-Aryan Herr Schultze, is Verne's first truly evil scientist. In his quest for world domination and racial supremacy, Schultze decides to showcase his deadly wares by destroying France-Ville and all its inhabitants. Both prescient and cautionary, The Begum's Millions is a masterpiece of scientific and political speculation and constitutes one of the earliest technological utopia/dystopias in Western literature. This Wesleyan edition features notes, appendices, and a critical introduction as well as all the illustrations from the original French edition.

The Begum's Fortune (French: Les Cinq cents millions de la Bégum), also published as The Begum's Millions, is an 1879 novel by Jules Verne, with some elements which could be described as utopian and others which seem clearly dystopian. It is remarkable as the first published book in which Verne was cautionary and to some degree pessimistic about the development of science and technology. Two men receive the news that they are part-inheritors to a vast fortune due to being the last surviving descendants of a French soldier-of-fortune who many years before settled in India and married the immensely rich widow of one of its native princes - the begum of the title. One of the inheritors is a gentle French physician, Dr. Sarrasin, who has long been concerned with the unsanitary conditions of the European cities. He decides to use his share of the inheritance to establish a utopian model city which would be constructed and maintained with public health as the primary concern of its government.

" That was, to be allowed to sleep for forty-eight hours, without any bridle or harness at all." " For eight days, if you like," answered Kin-Fo, "for you cannot talk while you are asleep." Kin-Fo and his companions occupied themselves in looking for a suitable hotel in Tong-Tcheou. That large city is only an immense suburb of Pekin. The road which joins it to the capital is bordered with villas, houses, tombs, and small pagodas. Kin-Fo was conducted to Tae-Ouang-Miao, the temple of the sovereign princes. It is a temple, transformed into a hotel where strangers can be comfortably lodged. An hour afterward Kin-Fo and his two body-guards left their rooms, after taking breakfast with a good appetite, and they asked themselves what was to be done now? " It is necessary," echoed Craig and Fry, " to read the Official Gazette, so that we may see if there is anything there concerning ourselves." " You are right," answered Kin-Fo. " Perhaps we may learn something about Wang, too." All three left the hotel. The two acolytes walked on each side of Kin-Fo, looking at the passers-by, and allowing no one to approach him. They went by the side streets, in this way, until they reached the wharves, where they bought a copy of the Official Gazette, and read it eagerly. There was nothing in it but the promise of the two thousand dollars, or the thirteen hundred taels, to any one who would make known to William. Bidulph the present residence of Mr. Wang, of Shang-Hai. " So he has not turned up? " said Kin-Fo. "He has...
