From the irrepressible author of Trout Bum and The View from Rat Lake comes an engaging, humorous, often profound examination of life's greatest mysteries: sex, death, and fly-fishing. John Gierach's quest takes us from his quiet home water (an ordinary, run-of-the-mill trout stream where fly-fishing can be a casual affair) to Utah's famous Green River, and to unknown creeks throughout the Western states and Canada. We're introduced to a lively group of fishing buddies, some local "experts" and even an ex-girlfriend, along the way Contemplative, evocative, and wry, he shares insights on mayflies and men, fishing and sport, life and love, and the meaning (or meaninglessness) of it all.

Honest and insightful, this memoir is a revealing picture of our recent past, of sport and poetry, the spirit of New Zealand's south and its distinctive people. This is the story of a typical Dunedin childhood, surrounded by 'nobies' - an extended family of eccentric grandparents and uncles, cousins and neighbours - who made a huge impact on a young mind. It's also the story of a not-so-typical family that was fanatical about sport - cycling, hockey, cricket, golf, fishing - and went on to produce top-ranking sportsmen. It's also the story of the growth of one of New Zealand's most loved poets. It shows three boys who became somebodies, but no better nor worse than the nobodies who inspired them. This is Brian Turner's view of the world: the landscape and people he was surrounded by; the principles he was taught; his sporting achievements; the early development of his brothers; his time moving between jobs as distinct as rabbiting in Central Otago and working in Customs; and his entry into the world of books.

The book is based on my life story to the age of forty. I was a normal young boy growing up. I enjoyed being a kid and playing with my friends after school and on the weekends. I loved my mum and dad very much. We would go on picnics and go swimming and fishing. We used to go to Sunday school, and I loved that. I just loved life! When was thirteen, Mum and Dad bought a boat, and we would go away every second weekend. I left school in fourth form and started work straight away. I had a number of jobs and met a girl. Eventually we were going to get married. When I was twenty-one, I caught my best man in bed with my girlfriend. That put me over the edge. So I started into drugs and drinking to escape the pain. I was hurting every day. You could say I was two people: Bill 1 and Bill 2. Unhappy Bill 2 would get stoned and drink every day. I was not proud of myself, but that was the way it was. I moved to Port Stephens to start a new life, but the only thing that changed was living in a new area; I still did drugs and drank, and one day I thought about committing suicide. Then one day I got down on my knees and cried out to God. He heard my cries, and I started going to church and was saved. I was delivered from drugs and drunkenness. It's now been eighteen years since Ive had drugs or been drunk. God performed a miracle in me, and I want that for other people.

"Incredible true stories from the limits of endurance, written by a man who’s been there" -- Sir Ranulph Fiennes, author and adventurer A riveting first-person account and history of rowers who have attempted to navigate across the Atlantic More people have climbed Mount Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic. For more than seventy days, Adam Rackley and his rowing partner ate, slept and rowed in a boat seven meters long by two meters wide, in one of the world’s most extreme environments. This is his story of adventure, endurance, and self-discovery. They were following in the wake of pioneers. In 1896 George Harbo and Frank Samuelsen, a pair of Norwegian fisherman, crossed the 2,500 miles in a wooden fishing dory––and their record stood for 114 years. John Fairfax, a smuggler, a gambler, and a shark hunter, was the first to complete the feat singlehandedly in 1969. Others have followed; some have not survived the attempt. This is their story, too.
