As we impress the Word of God on our hearts, talk about it along the way, write it on our gates and our doorpost, bind it to our wrist, text it to our friends, anchor in with our families, the Word does the work. Our part is not passive. It's just not primary. Only one kingdom will prevail-the kingdom of Jesus-and it is hovering just over the present state of chaos in our world, already breaking in through the tiniest seeds that will become-and indeed are becoming-the tallest trees. This is the second volume in a series of the Daily Text called First Word. Last Word. God's Word. It calls us to orient our lives around the one thing that endures, and the one thing that has the power to make a difference in the world.

This overview of the first book of the Bible shows that the first words contained in Genesis are enlarged and unfolded in a great many different directions and applications throughout the rest of the Bible, but the words themselves are never changed and they are never any more perfect in the last book in the Bible than they are in the first. "In the beginning God" (Genesis 1:1). No other book in the universe could ever begin like this except it were the book of God. These first words in the Bible prove that the book has a divine author; that it is not an invention of the human mind, for the very first expression is of such a character as to put it beyond all the thinking of the natural mind. There is no attempt to prove the existence of God, there is no prelude, but out from the vast eternity comes the simple, sublime expression that God was at the beginning.

For more than twenty years, Charles Templeton was a major figure in the church in Canada and the United States. During the 1950s, he and Billy Graham were the two most successful exponents of mass evangelism in North America. Templeton spoke nightly to stadium crowds of up to thirty thousand people. However, increasing doubts about the validity of the Old Testament and the teachings of the Christian church finally brought about a crisis in his faith and in 1957 he resigned from the ministry. In Farewell to God, Templeton speaks out about his reasons for the abandonment of his faith. In straightforward language, Templeton deals with such subjects as the Creation fable, racial prejudice in the Bible, the identity of Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus’ alienation from his family, the second-class status of women in the church, the mystery of evil, the illusion that prayer works, why there is suffering and death, and the loss of faith in God. He concludes with a positive personal statement: “I Believe.”

How does your personal faith journey relate to the big picture of the Bible? Christians often encounter various Bible passages through unrelated readings, studies, and sermons, making it difficult to grasp the progression of Scripture as a whole. Living God's Word surveys the entire Bible through broad themes that trace the progression of God's redemptive plan, focusing on how each portion of Scripture fits into the overarching narrative. Once you see the Bible as a Great Story, you'll begin to see how your own life fits into what God has done and is doing in the world. Each section of Living God's Word deals with a section of Scripture and includes: Reading and listening preparation An explanation A summary Observations about theological significance Connections to the Great Story Written assignments for further study Living God's Word is ideal for introductory college courses, adult Sunday school classes, small groups, or anyone who wants to understand how their life fits into the story of the Bible, enabling them to live faithfully in deep and important ways.
